Thanks, for all the good info and theories. And thanks, Ed, for taking the time to search for more information about treating demodex.

The big question I see in all this is...and one that everyone seems to be looking for a more encouraging answer for...do you or do you not breed a dog that has had a bout with demodex or whose pups have had it?

All this information on treatment is great to help dogs that already have the immune system weakness. But I don't see how any method of feeding or supplements will change the genes of a dog. If the genetic predisposition for an immune system weakness is there, then there is the chance it will be passed on to the offspring. And if both parents are carriers of the immune system weakness, then the pups stand an even greater chance of having the problem.

And the only answer to the big question I can see that anyone who cares about the boerboel could make would be to neuter any animal who has had demodex or that has produced pups that had demodex. So, irregardless of what others have told you, Angela, I would strongly advise you to neuter Nala.

And for the JB hangers-on out there, I am not trying to bash another breeder to try and sell my own pups. In fact, there are quite a few responsible breeders that I frequently recommend to people who enquire about pups when I don't have any available. My reason for cautioning people about JB and about people who have his animals simply comes from my belief that he is in it for the money...and the dog I saw that he sent my friend was so pathetic and crippled that any breeder who cares would never have sent him to someone as a sound animal...a person who cared would have found a rescue home or would have euthanized him. This was not a breeder who cares about the breed. A breeder whose only concern is making a profit any way they can would have replaced a pup that died of parvo due to improper immunizations with a crippled pup and then told my friend that he was sound.

I look forward to seeing what Ed's research on this subject produces.
