I am the owner of TooBad, now renamed "Ammo". We went to John's to pick him up knowing he had demodex and was on the road to recovery. John was not interested in making money, he just wanted Ammo placed in a great home. He insisted that we drive out to Oklahoma from NY to meet him and pick Ammo up. Ammo was given to us as a pet and we were told by John that he could not be bred (he was neutered as soon as his skin cleared up). I spent some time at John's and met all of the dogs there - his facilities were clean, his dogs were gorgeous, and Ammo was the only one with mange. John and Barbara are wonderful people who obviously care very much about where their dogs are placed. Upon bringing Ammo back to NY, we took him to 3 of our vets here. One of them (Dr. Andrew Kaplan) was named one of the top ten vets in NY by New York magazine, our holistic vet (Dr. Marty Goldstein) is the author of the book "The Nature of Animal Healing", and widely respected by holistic vets throughout the country. We also saw a dermatologist at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, one of the best veterinary hospitals in the world. ALL THREE of these vets told us that Ammo should not be allowed near puppies or dogs who are weak or ill, or may have compromised immune systens because the demodex could be transferred to them. On every vet visit, Ammo was taken into seperate waiting areas, not allowed on the waiting room scale, and the exam rooms were sterilized after we left because of the risk to other patients. We also had a rescue Rottie that we were fostering who was in very bad shape at the time - she had been hit by a car and needed hip surgery and was also starved (she weighed 46 lbs., now weighs 97 lbs.) and we were told that Ammo should not be allowed near her because of her weakened condition that she might be susceptible to the demodex. There are a lot of breeders out there who would have kept Ammo and bred him - he is a gorgeous Boerboel with a great temperment - but in John's case, Ammo was the top priority. I am so happy that John allowed us to make Ammo a part of our family... we love spoiling him rotten :)
Just thought this info might be useful - I am happy to provide my vets' information to anyone who e-mails me. Ammo has been demodex-free for several months and is very healthy (great hips too!)
