The only reason I have posted this information on a public board is because Terry and Ed were trying to make it appear that I have been breeding mangy dogs, since I bred Angela's dog and it did come down with mange. If I had not been the breeder of Nala they wouldn't have mentioned it I'm sure.
The facts (repeated once again) are that I bred a bitch that I got as an adult from South Africa. Her whole litter started showing signs of demodex when they were 4-6 months old. I did not have ANY mange here until that litter. I kept a male (Too Bad) from that litter. I had another litter 5 or 6 weeks later and Angela's pup, Nala, and another pup that I kept for myself from this litter were both put in my backyard with Too Bad. He had no sympoms at this time. A week later I shipped Angela her pup. A couple of months later my pup from the "mange litter" (Too Bad) started showing signs of mange-as did his littermates. A month or two later Nala, and her sibling that I had kept, both started showing signs of mange. Their litter had consisted of 9 puppies. None of the other 7 pups came into contact with Too Bad and none of them came down with mange. This was a repeat breeding and the first litter consisted of 9 puppies. None of them have had any problems. It is obvious that Nala and her sibling did not inherit mange or a predisposition to mange. They caught it from Too Bad. I also had a couple of perople who had bought puppies from the "mange litter" and had also bought another puppy as a companion to the first-these companion pups were from other litter than Nala and both of these companion puppies developed mange after being with the "mange litter" pups. None of the pups from their litter developed mange. I also got a couple of pups from another breeder and they went into my backyard while I had Too Bad. Both of them came down with mange but none of their litter mates did. There is no logical explanation for these puppies getting mange except that they had been with an infected puppy.
Now....Since they weren't born with it, caught it from an outside source, and cleared up fine, do I believe they will pass mange on to their pups if bred?? I don't know because I haven't bred one of them (yet) but I just don't believe they will.
As far as encouraging anyone else to do such a breeding....Don't. (I don't encourage pet owners to breed anyway-even if they have great dogs. Breeding is full of pitfalls and can be extremely stressful). There are more things that can go wrong in a pup than just mange. If you breed a litter and the pups DO have serious problems will you be able to replace the puppies with anything other than a pup from another breeding of the same two parents? As far as breeding Boerboels to make money...I guess it is possible but it's also a poorly thought-out plan. There are plenty of breeds that are much smaller, easier to care for, easier to raise, less expensive to feed and lower vet bills that still sell for more than Boerboels. You want to see a little money maker? Go price a Maltees or a French Bulldog, or any of a number of other little dogs (Jack Russels ain't cheap).
