I was just coming in here to add a follow up when I saw Anne's. Exactly Right. I found I had left something out. Of course the swelling is normal, BUT, Excessive swelling more than what you normally see can be an indication that the prolapse is inside and not visible. This was news to me and is very important. If there is any doubt in your mind at all about the amount of swelling You must manually feel inside for the ball shaped prolapse or have your Vet do it. My understanding is that if unnoticed the problem will become worse and more pronounced with each successive Heat. Which is one reason that a female can actually have 1 or 2 litters and then severely prolapse. It was always there, just not visible. These poor Boerboels seem to really have the odds stacked against them. But Knowledge and understanding will be their saviour. One final comment I must make even though I am ashamed. Some females can have prolapse that never seems to advance past a certain point. The ball can be easily seen in the opening but never advances further. She can be bread and have puppys her whole life. When I saw this at Ronnie's and asked what it was, because I had no idea about what prolapse even meant, He said oh that, That is just a common part of the Boerboel heat cycle, not a problem, just normal, nothing to even worry about. Now You Know why I am ashamed.
