The good ole' days! As most know, i grew up hunting with many of the early breeders and dogs directly off foundation stock. Owned several first generation dogs, such as Doe Valley Queen, who was sired by Ottis Edge's old Treivor, dam was Cumberland Valley Jezebell. My first Lep, Dutchman Creek Ranger, was from the famous cross, O'Neill Bennett's Buck and Black Gal. I never hunted with either, but hunted with many off them. Oneill's Mack, Tex, Tommy Byrd's Dolly, Noah Leggett's Sugar Blossum, to name just a couple. They were all extrodinary track dogs, ran ever track like it was red hot. Many thought this cross was what put the track power in this strain a few of us still have today. I owned many dogs sired by the Gold Nuggett, and trained several others for friends. Nuggetts pups were very hard, wide hunters and never seemed to wind down. Hussle is what I saw in them. Hunted many dogs sired by Nimrod and Elrod. Two different dogs, and ddifferent type offspring. O'Neill Bennett's ole King was sired by Elrod, out of Black Gal. King was a tireless hunter, it seemed that on our many "all nite Hunts", after about three in morning, King really shined, he finished bad tracks and found trees other good dogs missed. When King treed, you knew it! He was a very loud, powerful tree dog. Stood straight up on tree. When he treed, the coon was usually there. Often, King would tree alone , near dawn, and O'Neill would say "come on, let's go get something to eat, and then go get King's coon". After breakfast, we'ed go get him, and the coon, and take fresh dogs and hunt til aftewr sun way up.King was one of my very favorites. I gave ole Queen to ONeill and he bred her to King. Figure out that pedigree! My Radar dog was from that, looked like a Plott Cur.
Thomas Lee Goodwin ALWAYS kept real good dogs. He was real fond of Skiles' Hammer, who he got from Larry Singlton. I have a letter, Larry wrote me,telling about how he told his wife , how he justified paying such a big price for Hammer, and then, Delilah !! Have good pictures of them, and fond memories of Larry coming to our hunts, here. Thomas Lee talked me into buying "Little Lep" from John England, as both him and my buddy Noah Leggett, thought those dogs had tree power and were using that to cross on our eastern strain. Lep was indded special, and I'm glad to have owned him. I,d like to tell about Noah Leggett and Wayne Rogerson, and their dogs: but that's another story....Rex
