I have been curious about something regarding inbreeding and linebreeding lately. Why are there not more lines that individuals or groups are concentrating on? I mean real close breeding to set some traits that will breed true then breeding within those lines to keep those traits there. I understand that an out-cross or two is necessary at times to bring in something lacking, but then start breeding back in on those crosses to establish the original traits with the new genes infused.
Am I that far off base here? I would like to establish my own line one day and from what I gather from my research that is the way it is done.(or at least one way)
It seems that in all the cur breeds that I'm seeing, everyone is constantly out-crossing and mixing and mingling. It seems to me that this is somewhat of a gamble genetically speaking.
Can some of you experienced guys give your perspective on this subject. I don't have a lot of practical experience in the breeding game but hope to one of these days. I don't mind constructive critisism and I try to be open minded concerning new ideas.
I look forward to hearing your take on this matter and maybe some of your goals for the future in the breeding pen....Mike Richardson
