Perhaps GC was referring to the Holy Spirit?

Evil is such a harsh word when referring to the "sin nature". Biblically speaking, if a child is never shown love or training but is left to himself and the influences of the world's evil, with no one crossing his path with the "Good News" his future would be dark, indeed. On the other hand, what about Romans 1:20?

I don't think any parents (in their right mind) deliberately set out to train their children to choose evil over good. Most teach their children morals and are more shocked than anyone when something like this happens. Some, but not all parents allow their children to read, watch, listen, speak, play, and do things that have a negative influence on them. But children have free will, too, and while away from a conscientious parent's watchful eye, exercize that free will no matter how Godly the training. Even "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven) (sorry, had to throw that bumper sticker in). :)

Many do not have an understanding of the sin nature and would never think of mankind being basically evil. They love their children, whether or not they follow God's teachings. In our concept of a perfect world, all parents would accept God's teachings and His guidance, and no child would do any evil thing. But even those parents who have Biblically "trained up a child in the way he should go" have no guarantee that the child will not do evil things. The rest of that Scripture says, "and when he is old, he will not depart from it". This gives us assurance in our prayers of the hope that our child will eventually return to Godly principles.
Then there are those who don't "train up a child" spiritually but do teach them right from wrong. The child makes unwise choices, suffers the consequences, turns to God and the parents "lucked out" so to speak.
Child-rearing is definitely a responsibility not to be taken lightly, is never cut-and-dried, and is not for the faint of heart! But we do have an advantage if we depend on God for help. :)
