One of the arguments put forward against the BBC not allowing people on the continent to have their programmes is the one that the US studios would never agree to their programmes being seen in English by a limited and known number of subscribers on the continent. This is evidently on the grounds that it would be impossible for them to sell the X Files to a French broadcaster if 1% of the population had already seen it in English.
In that case, what about BFBS? Here you have an organisation broadcasting US programmes (including the X Files) throughout Europe to a limited number of people in Germany, Cyprus, southern Serbia etc. I doubt that the fees they pay to the US studios are based on them broadcasting to 500 million viewers.
