Does anyone else think that the character of Mason should have been killed off or permanently written out when Lane left?

I know that Mason is such a fascinating character, with many possible interesting storylines with other characters, most of all Julia. However, I think that Lane became Mason to such an extent that having other actors in the role degrades it in a way, or changes it irrevocably.

I wish that Mason had been written out after Lane's departure, so that fans would always remember him as Mason.
