Beatles smash hits now a mashup
POSTED: 4:08 p.m. EST, November 20, 2006
NEW YORK (AP) -- It's the Beatles as they never even imagined themselves.
The Beatles' "Love" album being released on Tuesday is a thorough reinterpretation of their work, with familiar sounds in unfamiliar places, primarily created by the son of the man who was in the control room for virtually all of their recording sessions.
It's a mashup, even though Giles Martin said he hates the word. John Lennon sings "he's a real nowhere man" in the background of the instrumental track to "Blue Jay Way." The keyboard of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" dissolves into the plodding guitar of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)."
"Strawberry Fields Forever" builds from Lennon's acoustic demo into a psychedelic swirl of sounds that incorporates bits of "Hello Goodbye," "Baby You're a Rich Man," "Penny Lane" and "Piggies."
The project was created for a collaboration with Cirque du Soleil and has the endorsement of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the widows of Lennon and George Harrison, Martin said.
"I had fresh ears -- if you can have fresh ears to the Beatles -- and my job was to make things different," said Martin, who was born in 1969 as the band was breaking up.
The rules were simple: Beatles tracks only, no electronic distortion of what they recorded, and no newly recorded music. The single exception was a string arrangement, written by original Beatles producer George Martin, to accompany an acoustic version of Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
Of course, the idea for the album itself distorts songs that fans have been familiar with for 40 years, in some cases. "There will be a lot of people pissed off about this," Giles Martin said, "but it was all in fun."
Count Bob Spitz, author of "The Beatles: The Biography," among the unhappy fans.
"I'm disappointed," Spitz said. "Not by the end product but by the fact that they are the Beatles' songs and overdubbing them and massaging them allows other people to impose their own creative ideas on something that was so immediate and of a particular time. I thought that legacy was virtually tamper-proof, until now.
"Once you meddle with something so fixed in the public's mind you will risk having a failure on the proportion to Twyla Tharp doing Bob Dylan," Spitz said, in a reference to the musical that is closing Sunday after less than a month on Broadway.
Spitz said the Beatles' company, Apple, has become adept over the past 15 years in putting new twists on the band's catalogue for projects like "Love," which pointedly arrives in stores at the beginning of the holiday shopping season.
At the very least, it's a grand guessing game. Where is that instrumental passage from? What will come next?
Martin, a former jingles writer who has had production or mixing credits on Jeff Beck, Elvis Costello, INXS and Kate Bush albums, likened the project to "going through your dad's closet."
He did most of the work at the Abbey Road studios, where the music was originally recorded. His dad, now 80, is hard of hearing and his primary job was to interpret his knowledge of the Beatles, saying whether or not Lennon would have liked something, for instance.
Giles Martin said he came away impressed with the Beatles' abilities as a unit. Even when cracks were appearing in their personal relationships at the end, you could still hear the chemistry and quality in the music, he said.
Periodically, he would invite the two Beatles and two widows to hear what he had done.
"They didn't have any disagreements," he said. "They really didn't. Yoko was concerned about the quality of John's voice on 'Strawberry Fields Forever' because it was a demo. All they care about is whether it's good or bad."
During a playback of "Come Together," McCartney leaned over to Starr and said, "I remember that. We were really good on that day."
Starr said hearing the finished product was powerful for him and that "I even heard things I'd forgotten we'd recorded."
When journalists were recently invited into a New York studio to hear Martin play some of the songs, a security guard stood at the entrance to make sure no CDs or recordings snuck out. Beatles received the same treatment, Martin said. They weren't allowed copies of the project in progress, Martin said.
As a producer, Martin said the term "mashup" implies two things rammed together -- like when producer Danger Mouse, now of Gnarls Barkley fame, mixed Jay-Z's "The Black Album" and the Beatles' classic "White Album" for an underground hit. While those type of projects can be good, Martin said they don't stand up to repeated listenings, which he believes is what sets "Love" apart.
It was a unique bonding experience for the two Martins. Giles wasn't around to experience those key moments in his father's career and through "Love," by extension, he was.
"Without question, it gave me enormous respect for him and them," he said. "His world was laid bare in front of me, as was their playing. We'd smile at each other and say, 'They were really good, weren't they?"'

Stooges to release first record since '73 in March
POSTED: 9:55 a.m. EST, December 13, 2006
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Iggy Pop's pioneering punk rock group the Stooges will release their first album since 1973 on March 20, and will promote it with a world tour.
"The Weirdness," a Steve-Albini-produced set including such tracks as "Greedy Awful People" and "End of Christianity," will be released by Pop's Virgin Records label.
Pop reunited with brothers Ron and Scott Asheton for the project, while bass player Mike Watt has taken over for original member Dave Alexander.
The Stooges' last studio album, "Raw Power," came out in 1973, at a time when Pop was in the middle of a lengthy heroin addiction. With the help of David Bowie, he embarked on a successful solo career in the mid 1970s, scoring such hits as "Lust for Life" and "The Passenger."
During sessions for his 2003 album "Skull Ring," Pop called the Ashetons, who agreed to contribute to four songs on the disc. That year, the band (with Watt) played its first show together in 30 years at the Coachella music festival in southern California. A full tour followed.
The "Weirdness" tour will include a March 17 stop at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

Petty Ain't Suing The Peppers -- strawberry shortcake, 09:50:08 06/28/06 Wed (awfnt.awf.org/38.118.12.58)
Tom Petty to Chili Peppers: We’re Cool
Forget all that stuff about Tom Petty suing the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Earlier this month the New York Post reported that the remarkable similarities between the Chili Peppers’ “Dani California” and “Last Dance With Mary Jane” could turn into a lawsuit. “Tom Petty was made aware of this and is looking into legal ramifications,” the item stated. “The Chili Peppers could be facing a huge plagiarism lawsuit.”
But Petty set the record straight himself in the July 14th issue of Rolling Stone, on newstands today. Here’s an excerpt:
RS: Have you heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers song “Dani California” yet, because obviously it sounds a lot like “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”
Petty: Yes, I have. Everyone everywhere is stopping me. The truth is, I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock & roll songs sound alike. Ask Chuck Berry. The Strokes took “American Girl” [for their song “Last Nite”], and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, “OK, good for you.” It doesn’t bother me.
RS: There have been news reports that you were going to sue the Chili Peppers.
Petty: If someone took my song note for note and stole it maliciously, then maybe. But I don’t believe in lawsuits much. I think there are enough frivolous lawsuits in this country without people fighting over pop songs.

It's Cobain over Elvis as top-earning dead celeb
POSTED: 2:56 p.m. EDT, October 24, 2006
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley ceded his crown to Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain on Forbes.com's list as the top-earning dead celebrity.
The list, published on Tuesday, said grunge rocker Cobain earned $50 million between October 2005 and October 2006. Presley wound up in the No. 2 slot with $42 million, down from last year's $45 million.
Forbes.com bases its dollar amounts on licensing deals for using the deceased celebrities' work or image in advertising or elsewhere.
This was Cobain's first time on the list in its six years of publication. Presley has ruled the roost since its inception, said Forbes.com staff writer Lacey Rose.
Cobain's coup was due to his widow, actress and singer Courtney Love, who sold a 25-percent stake in the Seattle grunge group's song catalog to New York music publishing company PrimeWave.
Ranked after Presley is "Peanuts" cartoon strip creator Charles Schulz at $35 million.
Rounding out the top five were Beatle John Lennon at $24 million and groundbreaking physicist Albert Einstein at $20 million, whose estate profited from such licensing deals as the popular "Baby Einstein" educational videos.
Other celebrities on the list include Theodore Geisel, better known as children's book author Dr. Seuss; rhythm & blues pioneer Ray Charles, silver screen legend Marilyn Monroe and reggae superstar Bob Marley.
Past top earners include songwriter Irving Berlin and actor Marlon Brando.

Rivers Cuomo: Weezer is 'done'
Frontman leaves door open, but doesn't sound upbeat on uniting
Friday, July 14, 2006; Posted: 9:10 a.m. EDT (13:10 GMT)
NEW YORK (AP) -- Rivers Cuomo says that, for now, Weezer is "done."
Cuomo, the band's bespectacled songwriter and frontman, told MTV that while he remains in touch with his bandmates, "we've never mentioned getting together."
"Really, for the moment, we are done," he said. "And I'm not certain we'll ever make a record again, unless it becomes really obvious to me that we need to do one."
Weezer has released five albums since forming in 1993. The group took a considerable break between 1996's "Pinkerton" and 2001's self-titled disc (typically called "The Green Album"). The band's last release was "Make Believe," in 2005.
The liner notes of that album led to conjecture that it was Weezer's last. They included a quote from a parting soliloquy in Shakespeare's "Tempest," the playwright's last play.
Cuomo, 36, said he has been writing songs, but said, "I don't know what'll happen with these songs -- if anything. ... I certainly don't see them becoming Weezer songs, and I don't really see the point of a solo career. So we'll just have to see."
Jim Merlis, a spokesman for Geffen said that the label had no official response, but did add Cuomo has made similar statements in the past.
Cuomo recently graduated from Harvard and married his longtime girlfriend, Kyoko Ito.

Tower Records/B-Sides -- Mike, 08:45:17 11/25/06 Sat (ool-44c72234.dyn.optonline.net/68.199.34.52)
So anyone who has a Tower by them, go now, the entire chain is closing out and all music/DVDs are 40% off. Is it still a little overprices? Sure, but I'm not arguing getting Sun Ra for $8.99
Has anyone heard any of the B-Sides of Stadium Arcadium? I got the singles at Tower and was surprised how heavy Whatever We Want was. Lately is cool, more mellow, but as I feel with some songs on the album (She's Only 18) a little underdeveloped. LOL I already have some ideas for the next Chili Peppers album, damn fanboy fantasizing!

- i disagree about BSSM ('cali' was extraordinary) but i do have the new volta album and i just listened to it for the first time yesterday. i need about two more spins before i can give a definite and hopefully intelligent answer, lol. - Sorry to sort of hijack the thread, but this brings to mind a question I find interesting - Most people agree that BSSM is the Peppers' best, but what does everyone consider their SECOND best? I'm actually gonna have to go with 'Stadium,' but I suppose that could just be because of the relative "newness" of it. But I really love it - I think it does a great job of balancing the craft of 'Cali'/'BTW' with some of the wreckless abandon of 'BSSM.' Thoughts? - i agree 100%, i think jeremys death had a lot to do with it, just the same as john leaving with peppers.....im not to into the new MV record, you can be avante garde and weird without having 20 min songs filled with useless noodling. (NT) -- Louis, 13:56:48 11/12/06 Sun (cache-mtc-ad01.proxy.aol.com/64.12.116.195)
- I checked the record out again and some of the songs are ok. alot of it is still very overly self indulgent but the 1 track that really sticks out is "Asilos Magdalena". I like the acoustic "ballad" feel to it. It reminds me of some of the traditional spanish guitar music out. Anyway, it's a bit weird (postponed and german only) release. What do you guys think... will it happen on 2 jan or not (at all)?

non-john: Quick Doors Interview -- strawberry shortcake, 13:23:22 11/16/06 Thu (awfnt.awf.org/38.118.12.58)
People still catching up to the Doors
POSTED: 4:00 p.m. EST, November 16, 2006
LOS ANGELES, California (Billboard) -- As they prepare to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut album, the surviving members of the Doors have been reflecting on their legacy.
The trio of keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore have collaborated with music journalist Ben Fong-Torres for "The Doors by the Doors," an oral history that was published last week by Hyperion.
They also spent time in the studio with longtime engineer Bruce Botnick, as he worked on remixing the Doors' six studio albums in 5.1 surround sound for archival label Rhino Records' "Perception" boxed set, due November 21.
Billboard recently spoke with Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore in separate phone interviews (Densmore and Manzarek don't talk, a product of an ongoing lawsuit) about the enduring appeal of their music. (Listen to Manzarek talk about some favorite Doors songs.)
Q. In your wildest dreams, did you ever think that people would still be listening to the songs that you recorded for your first album, four decades later?
MANZAREK: Hardly, but on the other hand, that's not (a musician's) concern. I don't think musicians play music thinking in terms of posterity. It's just the opposite. You have to think in that individual moment in time, the Zen moment in time.
And if you capture the energy, then you do what a musician is supposed to do. If by the grace of the gods on Mount Olympus you happen to be liked 40 years from now, that's only a testament to the Doors' audience as far as I'm concerned.
Q. What did your parents think of you playing this crazy rock 'n' roll at the time?
MANZAREK: They loved it, and then "Light My Fire" becomes the No. 1 song in America. What's not to like? My mother had three boys of her own, Raymond, Richard and James. So Jim Morrison comes along, and I introduced him and brought him down to Redondo Beach to bum a couple of free meals off my parents. My mother loved him. That's her fourth son. She cut his hair. She used to cut our hair and gave Jim a little trim, too.
Q. What were the influences that shaped the Doors' sound and what does each member of the band bring to the table?
DENSMORE: Ray grew up in Chicago so he had the blues, Muddy Waters and all that. He also had classical training. That was pretty cool. That was invoked in the intro to "Light My Fire," which was very kind of Bach-like. Robby had a flamenco and folk music background. I was so enamored with watching Robby's fingers crawl across the flamenco guitar strings like a crab.
I'm a jazz guy and Ray was also into jazz, so when we met we talked about (John) Coltrane and Miles (Davis). I think that influence gave me freedom. Like in "When the Music's Over," I just stopped playing the beat, and I would just comment on Jim's words percussively, out of rhythm, like we were having a conversation. I got that from listening to Elvin Jones and John Coltrane.
And then there was Jim, Mr. Literary, who had read every book on the planet, but didn't know anything about music and how to write songs and trusted us. Therefore, we were a total democracy.
We shared everything -- writing credits, veto power. Jim had melodies as well as words. He didn't know how to play a chord on any instrument, but he had melodies in his head. To remember the lyrics he would think of melodies and then they would stay in his head. He had melodies and lyrics in his head, and he would sing them a cappella, and we would eke out the arrangements.
Q. What in your mind is the essential Doors album?
DENSMORE: The first one had all the hits, but was poorly recorded. There were only four tracks. The second one was one of my faves because we got relaxed in the studio. We had fun experimenting.
The fourth and fifth (albums), we tried strings and horns. Those are good, the critics hated them, but I don't care. They were (both hit albums).
The last one, "L.A. Woman," gets back to who we really are. We got back to the essence. We produced it ourselves with Bruce Botnick and only did two takes on everything. F--- the mistakes, like Miles (Davis). I said that to Ray when we were recording, "Let's just go for the feeling and raw emotion."
Q. What inspired "Light My Fire"?
KRIEGER: At that point, Jim was writing the songs. I'd written maybe a couple before that but nothing too serious. One day Jim mentioned that we didn't have enough songs, so he said, "Why don't you guys try and write some songs."
So I went home and wrote "Light My Fire." It was the first song I wrote for the Doors. Jim came up with the second verse about the funeral pyre. Ray did the baroque intro and John came up with the kind of Latin drum beat.
When we would play "Light My Fire" for the live audience, everybody loved it, so we knew it was a special song. I knew if it was going to compete with Jim's stuff, it had to be pretty heavy duty.
So I figured, OK, I'll write about the four elements: earth, air, fire or water. I picked fire because I like the (Rolling) Stones song "Play With Fire."
Q. The Doors have been covered by hundreds of artists. Do you have any favorites?
DENSMORE: I'd say Jose Feliciano and X, because they found a new way of interpreting the songs they did. Jose made "Light My Fire" a ballad. That's very interesting. We didn't think of it that way when we wrote it. Echo & the Bunnymen just copied "People Are Strange," which is cool, we made some money, thanks. But when an artist finds a new interpretation of one of your songs, that's great. It turns your head around.
Q. What is it about the Doors' music that makes it so seemingly timeless?
KRIEGER: The Doors were just ahead of their time. It seems like what we were playing back then, the blues and stuff like that that we were into, were starting to catch on 10 years later. Because we were ahead of our time in our heyday, we weren't really that huge.
I don't think a lot of people really understood what the hell we were doing until later. Maybe just now people are waking up to the Doors' music.
Q. How would you like the Doors to be remembered?
KRIEGER: For the music. I think that's how we will be remembered in the long run, because all the movies, all the books and all that stuff eventually will go away, but the music will last for a long time. If you think about Count Basie or Duke Ellington, people don't really know who those guys were, but they do know the music. After 50 or 60 years, that's what's important.
