Jim Morrison's dad: Son's death 'unfortunate'

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- The father of late Doors singer Jim Morrison has broken his silence to share memories of his estranged son, who once sang about killing him and joked that his family was dead.

George Morrison, a retired U.S. Navy admiral, is one of the contributors to "The Doors by the Doors," an authorized memoir released this week. The book's author, rock journalist Ben Fong-Torres, also interviewed the band's three surviving members and Jim's younger brother and sister, among others.

"We look back on him with great delight ... The fact that he's dead is unfortunate but looking back on his life it's a very pleasant thought," George Morrison says in the book.

Jim Morrison, a difficult teen who rebelled against his father's military lifestyle, went on to become one of the most magnetic performers in rock 'n' roll.

But he disowned his family, and once made a throwaway comment that they were dead. He also referenced his parents in the Oedipal rant "The End," singing that he wanted to kill his father and sleep with his mother.

Andy Morrison recalls that his mother, Clara, who died last year, took him to a Doors concert in Washington, D.C., and asked to see Jim, but he refused to meet with her, and she drove home in tears.

The Morrisons surmise that Jim's hostility was really designed to shield them from too much attention.

"I had the feeling that he felt we'd just as soon not be associated with his career," George Morrison says. "He knew I didn't think rock music was the best goal for him. Maybe he was trying to protect us."

Adds his sister, Anne, "He liked mystique, too. He didn't want to be from somewhere."

Jim Morrison died of a heart attack in Paris in 1971, and his grave at the Pere Lachaise cemetery is one of the city's top tourist attractions. His family pays the authorities to take care of the site.

George Morrison said it was "quite an honor ... for the family" to have his son buried near cultural giants like Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf and Frederic Chopin.

Hi all. Haven't posted here in quite some time. Hope all is well with everyone.

I've been very much enjoying 'Stadium Arcadium,' but half the fun of a double album (for a music geek anyway) is imagining how it would play as a single LP. So I'd like to see what you're tracklisting would be if 'SA' were 14 (instead of 28) tracks. My strategy was to take 7 from 'Jupiter' and 7 from 'Mars,' but that is by no means a requirement in this little exercise.

It should be noted that I have not necessarily picked my favorites, (I would personally rather hear, for instance, "She Looks To Me" than "Death of a Martian,) but instead picked the songs that I feel "work" the best. I also chose songs that would have a place in the structure of an album. I am personally quite tired of "Dani California," but an album needs an opener, and it was the only song that fit the bill to my ears. In other words, in all this, I chose to be objective rather than subjective, but please feel free to arrange your own tracklisting by any means you feel appropriate.

- That's funny, Estress! Great minds think alike, I suppose. ;) And about, "Strip My Mind," that was a very difficult cut for me. I really love the song. I think the verses are some of AK's best moments, both melodically and lyrically. I just find the chorus to be somewhat of a letdown. It seems to simmer when it should explode. Don't get me wrong - I LIKE the chorus, but I LOVE the verses, and it seems that the chorus of the song should be the strongest part. Plus, it didn' really fit into the structure of my album. I wanted to keep the songs in the order they appear on the real 'SA' and including "Strip My Mind" would have meant 4 slow songs in a row, which would have hurt the pace of the album in my opinion (boy am I a music geek or what? ;p) Needless to say, I'm glad I don't REALLY have to cut 'SA' in half, as I wouldn't want to have to go without this fantastic song and many others that didn't make it to my tracklisting. the videoclip to snow should've been released by now. looking very forward to seeing this one. I'm excited about the next 2 chili peppers singles snow & hump de bump, both killers in my opinion. I can see those 2 singles going BIG. I remember hearing Dani California in clubs and shops etc. it would be nice to have that as well with these singles. hump de bump should be 2007's clubhit #1.

- Well, the Chili Peppers have already collaborated with Snoop haha, but seriously, yeah they're primarily hip hop/pop producers but I like a lot of that panning and stereo mixing they do and I'd be curious how they incorporate keyboards and what effect they'd have on Chad's drum sound. I've been listening to the first N.E.R.D. album and there's some production that reminds me of Eno (who just co-produced the new Paul Simon record). 'Fraggle Rock' to be made into movie

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Jim Henson's "Fraggle Rock" is coming to the big screen.

The 1980s cult hit TV show is being developed by Ahmet Zappa -- younger son of Frank Zappa -- into a full-length live-action musical fantasy starring the classic characters.

"(Zappa) recently created his own fantasy property ('Mighty McFearless'), and we had him in to talk about books and movies," said Lisa Henson, who serves as co-CEO of the Jim Henson Co. with her brother, Brian.

"During that conversation, I had an intuition that he might be a 'Fraggle Rock' fan. He jumped out of his seat when he heard our idea of making 'Fraggle Rock' into a feature-length movie."

Zappa -- a musician and TV personality who will serve as the project's executive producer -- is developing a treatment in which puppet stars Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red will travel from beneath the Rock and venture into the human world for the first time.

"The Fraggles didn't really get into the human world on the series, so we plan to make the movie more about the intersection between the Fraggles and the humans," Lisa Henson said.

Zappa is informally talking to musician friends about writing original songs for the movie. The original Henson puppets will be refurbished and updated for the film, with little expectation of computer-generated enhancements.

A release date has yet to be determined. Lisa Henson plans to hire a screenwriter and director once an initial treatment is completed.

"We're taking the movie as far as we can independently because the company has a big personal investment in how the movie turns out," she said.

"Fraggle Rock" premiered on HBO in 1983 and over five seasons garnered multiple awards and a global fan following. The show was created by Jim Henson as an international co-production and was adapted for each territory to meet the needs of its audience.

LOS ANGELES, October 16, 2006 � Red Hot Chili Peppers and Gnarls Barkley will hit the road together for three months (January to March) in early 2007, playing arenas across the United States. Specific dates will be announced shortly.

The Chili Peppers launched their current U.S. tour to much praise in August, in support of their critically acclaimed double album Stadium Arcadium. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album debuted in May at ..1 in 28 countries around the world, including topping the Billboard 200 on their home turf. Thus far the album has spawned a pair of ..1 Modern Rock hits �Dani California� and �Tell Me Baby.�

Gnarls Barkley, the combination of Grammy-winning producer Danger Mouse and superstar vocalist Cee-Lo Green, released their debut St. Elsewhere CD this year to critical acclaim. Their first single, �Crazy� garnered more radio format play than any single in U.S. radio history � with nine radio formats and a U.S. radio audience of nearly 100 million. A top five album in almost every country in Europe, the band was recently nominated for two MTV Europe Music Awards for best song and best video. St. Elsewhere is currently on its way to double platinum sales in the U.S.

Safe to say it will be a powerful concert bill.

Stadium Arcadium is the ninth studio album from the Chili Peppers. All told, the band has sold more than 50 million albums, logged seven multiplatinum CDs and earned a record-setting ten .. 1 Modern Rock hits.

They also continue to ride the crest of the ongoing awards season, topping nominations for the 13th annual MTV Europe Music Awards with best rock act, best group, best album and best song for �Dani California.� The band also tied for most nominations for the 2006 American Music Awards where they are up for Pop/Rock nominations for favorite and, duo or group, favorite album and favorite artist in the Alternative Music category. Additionally, Chili Peppers have been nominated for the 2006 mtvU Woodie Awards on MTV�s 24-hour college network for Alumni Woodie (aka The You�re Still OK in our Book Award).

Gnarls Barkley is currently preparing a limited edition deluxe package of St. Elsewhere for release November 7. The CD+DVD package includes a 92 page booklet, four music videos and bonus songs from live performances.

Gnarls also recently released a video for their second single, a cover of the Violent Femmes classic �Gone Daddy Gone.�

Stooges recording first album in 33 years

NEW YORK (Billboard) -- Reconstituted punk pioneers the Stooges have spent the past week recording their first album since 1973 with producer Steve Albini in Chicago.

The as-yet-untitled set is due next year Virgin, home of Stooges frontman Iggy Pop.

Pop, drummer Scott Asheton and guitarist Ron Asheton are joined by bassist Mike Watt, who is subbing for Dave Alexander. Watt is chronicling the sessions in explicit detail on his Web site.

Among the tentatively titled tracks scheduled to appear, Watt describes "ATM" as "the most what I'd call 'riff-oriented' of all the tunes," and says Brendan Benson may add harmony vocals to "End of Christianity." "O Solo Mio" is said to be "the real ballad ... of the bunch, but way more driving than any kind of 'ballad.' "

"It's neat to see how they all three work," Watt writes. "The best I can do is help them let me help do what I can with the bass, follow their direction and keep my head together. Anything else is crazy. I like the way Iggy and Ron get everything they can for the tune right after me and Scotty record with them, so each tune can live in world that's pretty whole and unto its self."

The Stooges are planning an extensive tour in support of the new album, but currently the lone date confirmed is an appearance during Britain's Nightmare Before Christmas festival, set for December 8-10 near Glastonbury.

The Mars Volta have blamed drummer Jon Theodore�s departure from the band on his flirtations with women, drink and surfing.

Theodore contributed to the prog outfit�s current album �Amputecture�, but left shortly before its release.

Shedding light on the split, band lynchpin Cedric Bixler-Zavala explains to Gigwise: "We come to a city, and we play one album live, but we're making another album during the day and then after we play. And Jon just wasn't having that. Jon likes his women, Jon likes his surfing, Jon likes his drinking.

�You can ask any fan that was in Hamburg when we played for Frances the Mute, we were set to play the last thirty minutes of the set and Jon took off, because the night before he partied too much.�

He continued: �We had five years of a tyranny of laziness, he just didn't like to throw down as much as we did. When he did care about the band it's when it was a money issue, that's when he would show up to a meeting.

�God bless him, he's a great drummer, but the guy was late for his own funeral as well: we were telling him he wasn't in the band he didn't even show up to that meeting - an analogy for the whole time we were in the band with him."

      - hey babe. the who is one of my fave bands but admittedly i didn't get into them until a few years ago. i didn't see josh with gnarles but the peppers did actually do a pretty good set. i remember being (pleasantly) surprised that with the exception of 'gia' in the encore there wasn't a single bsssm song in the set. i was also surprised there was no 'utb' but again, as magical as that song is i've heard it enough over the years so i was fine with not hearing it that night. i agaree that that they should pull out more obscure old stuff (catholic school girls, nevermind, behind the sun to name a few) and more B-sides (show me your soul, sikamikanico, fela's cock, gong-li, to name a few). i've always thought their b-sides were some of the best stuff they did so needless to say my jaw dropped when they did 'FF.' i think the set list has gotten better but yeah, a few more old skool jams and the more obsure stuff would def. lighten things up a bit. NEW YORK (Billboard) -- The Nirvana concert film "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!" will make its DVD debut November 7, 12 years after it was originally issued on VHS.

The Geffen Records release was conceived by Kurt Cobain as a way to anthologize Nirvana's quick ascent to rock superstardom but was not completed until after his 1994 suicide.

The bulk of the DVD features live footage from the band's 1991-92 tour in support of "Nevermind," highlighted by versions of "Breed," "Drain You," "Dive" and "Aneurysm." According to the label, the footage has been color-corrected and digitally remastered; previously unreleased bonus performances will be included but details have yet to be announced.

"Live! Tonight! Sold Out!" also sports performances of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "About a Girl," "Love Buzz," "Negative Creep," "Come As You Are," "Territorial Pissings," "Something in the Way," "On a Plain," "Lithium" and "Sliver," among others.

The only prior Nirvana DVD was included with the 2004 boxed set "With the Lights Out."

Probably my favorite part of amputechture is when (I assume) John plays the intro notes for vermicide. Especially that note after 6-9 seconds. That one just goes up in smoke. It's beautiful & atmospheric, I'd love to hear that kinda stuff live.

I was 14, and skipped school to go buy it. It was the first time in my life I had anticipated an album release and bought it on day one. I think I still have the hand-written reciept from the purchase. It was amazing.

Any of you see this movie 'Devil and Daniel Johnston'? Very interesting and made mostly with self styled journalism. As if the guy always knew a movie would be made about him.

Its apealing to all walks whether your falmiliar with his work or not, as it depicts this spirited musician growing up in West Virginia and aspiring to some sortof success, yet sabotaging it at every corner because of his erratic behavior. Its a most interesting biopic of a musician/artist/carnival barker who overcame much and inspired many of the well known musicians of our times. The fact that the guy still enjoying making his art is a testament to greater forces.

Nightclub owner goes on trial for 100 fire deaths

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (AP) -- Jury selection began Tuesday for the highly anticipated trial of one of the owners of the nightclub where a fire killed 100 people three years ago.

Michael Derderian is the first person to stand trial for the February 20, 2003, blaze at The Station.

It was the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, and also injured more than 200 people.

The man whose fireworks display set off the blaze is sitting in prison, but for many victims' relatives, the first of the two most important trials in the case is only now about to begin.

Derderian owned The Station with his brother. The one-story, wooden nightclub quickly became a deathtrap when stage pyrotechnics ignited the soundproofing foam that covered its walls and ceiling.

Still fiercely angry more than three and a half years after the fire, victims' relatives see the Derderians as penny-pinchers who created unsafe conditions in the club and have never shown the same remorse as the man whose pyrotechnics started the fire.

Daniel Biechele, now serving four years in prison, was tour manager for the band Great White, which was on stage when the fire started and lost guitarist Ty Longley. Biechele pleaded guilty and tearfully apologized in court in May.

James Gahan, whose 21-year-old son, Jimmy, died in the fire, said he talked with state Attorney General Patrick Lynch at Biechele's sentencing. "He just asked me what I thought, and I said, `Now, the real work starts."'

200 manslaughter counts
Michael Derderian's trial is expected to last months and Jeffrey Derderian's trial will follow. Both face 200 counts of involuntary manslaughter -- two counts for each person killed under separate legal theories. Each count carries a maximum 30-year sentence.

More than 200 people were injured in the blaze. Many people who live in Rhode Island, the nation's smallest state, know someone who was killed or injured, or one of their relatives.

"The Derderians feel like the targets that the public has focused its angst, its anger on," said Andrew Horwitz, a professor at the Roger Williams University law school in Bristol.

Prosecutors say the Derderians showed a pattern of poor management and dangerous decisions, including installing the highly flammable polyurethane foam in violation of the state fire code and allowing bands to use pyrotechnics as part of their acts.

They also say the Derderians did several things that made it harder to evacuate the club: packing too many people into the building, having an exit door that swung the wrong way and failing to have illuminated exit signs.

The Derderians say the band never had permission for the pyrotechnics, but band members contend they did.

The brothers' lawyers say they were never told the foam violated the fire code, and say reports by fire inspectors who surveyed the club make no mention of the material.

Those arguments fail to satisfy people such as Chris Fontaine, who lost her 22-year-old son, Mark.

"Anybody who owns that type of an establishment bears a responsibility to know what the codes are and to follow them accordingly," said Fontaine, who plans to attend every day of the trial. "These are people who put lives at stake."

'It was their building'
"It was their building," said Claire Bruyere, whose daughter, Bonnie Hamelin, 27, was among those killed. "They were supposed to make everyone OK."

The attorney for the Derderians, Kathleen Hagerty, said the families' anger is "certainly understandable."

"We're looking at the case, obviously, legally, which is very different," Hagerty said. "If anything, I think this case will certainly shine a bright light on all that went wrong in this tragedy."

At a news conference two nights after the blaze, Jeffrey Derderian broke down several times as he expressed his grief over the fire.

The brothers attended funerals of some victims and have made voluntary payments to the families of employees killed in the fire. They also declared bankruptcy, however, freeing them from liability in pending lawsuits filed against them by victims' families and survivors.

Paul Vanner, The Station's stage manager, said the Derderians were rookie club owners but followed the rules. "There's no way that they would have known" the foam was dangerous, he said.

The salesman who sold the Derderians the foam sent a letter to prosecutors saying his company's policy was to not educate customers about the potential dangers of the foam, but the company's general manager has said that claim was not true.

Syd Barrett's house up for sale

Along with some of the Pink Floyd legend's artwork

The house Pink Floyd legend Syd Barrett lived in for the last 25 years of his life is up for sale - as well as some of the reclusive star's never before seen artwork.

Cheffins estate agents of the star's home city Cambridge are selling the property following Barrett's death from pancreatic cancer in July this year. Barrett moved to the house in 1981, initially to live with his mother, and stayed there until he died.

Barrett's sister Rosemary said: "Roger (Syd) loved the peace and quiet of the house, hearing the children in the road playing and enjoying cycling to the shops.

"He put his stamp on the house with frequent redecoration, building his own furniture. In the front room he did his drawing and painting. In the back room he relaxed and listened to jazz. Upstairs he slept in all the bedrooms, deciding which one as the mood took him."

Items from Barrett's estate, including some artwork never before seen in public, will be come up for auction later this year (November 29/30) at Cheffin Auctioneers in Cambridge's Fine Art Sale.

The auction will consist of items left by Barrett in his Cambridge house, including his hand-painted bikes, furniture, books, homemade speakers and a classical guitar.

The 2006 MTV Video Music Awards are gonna rock. And shake. And, um, disco.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dani California" and Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" nabbed a leading seven nominations apiece from the Moon Men-doling award show, including nods for the show's most coveted honor, Video of the Year.

Erstwhile MTV fixture Madonna received four nominations for her leotard-donning performance in "Hung Up," as did the video for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" from rock newcomers Panic! At the Disco.

Rounding out the most lauded nominees was Christina Aguilera, whose "Ain't No Other Man," the lead single off her forthcoming Back to Basics album, earned four nods.

The top five nominees will all vie for Video of the Year.

In addition to their top nod, the Red Hot Chili Peppers also nabbed nominations for Best Group Video and Best Rock Video along with a host of technical honors.

As for Shakira, the hip-shaking pop star also landed a nomination for Best Female Video, where she'll battle it out with Aguilera, Madonna, last year's winner Kelly Clarkson, nominated this time for "Because of You," and Nelly Furtado, who scored a nod for "Promiscous."

The Latina songbird also scored nominations for Best Dance Video, Best Pop Video and the Viewer's Choice Award.

As for Mrs. Ritchie, her disco-themed dance-floor opus is also up for, fittingly, Best Dance Video, Pop Video and Best Choreography.

Panic! At the Disco, meanwhile, will go toe-to-toe with last year's dominating act, Green Day, in the Best Rock Video and Best Group Video categories. The American Idiot rockers were nominated this year for their heavily eyelined efforts in "Wake Me Up When September Ends."

Panic! will also battle it out in the Best New Artist category, facing such disparate acts as Angels & Airwaves, Avenged Sevenfold, Rihanna, Chris Brown and James Blunt.

Aside from the five main contenders, a score of artists managed to snag multiple nominations this year.

A.F.I., Chris Brown and Gnarls Barkley all nabbed three nominations, while Kanye West, Rihanna and the Pussycat Dolls logged two nods each.

Missing from the nominations was the video for Justin Timberlake's highly anticipated single, "SexyBack," which, having premiered just last week, didn't make the cutoff deadline for the award show.

However, MTV knows how to pander to its audience and the kudosfest will not be without its dose of Timberlake. The FutureSex/LoveSounds singer has been tapped to perform at the ceremony alongside a superstar lineup.

In addition to Timberlake, the Killers, Beyonce, the Raconteurs, Panic! At the Disco, T.I. and Ludacris are all set to perform.

MTV has yet to announce a host for the VMAs, which last year were emceed by Diddy.

The cable net did announce, however, that the voting process would be overhauled this year. For the first time ever, viewers will be able to cast their vote for their music faves in all categories, not just Viewer's Choice, as in years past.

The 2006 MTV VMAs will air live from Radio City Music Hall Aug. 31.

Two of Syd Barrett's hand painted bikes, various pieces of his art and a classical guitar are up for auction in Cambridge.

Barrett, the original leader of Pink Floyd and one of rock's most famous recluses, died in July from pancreatic cancer.

Cheffins, a Cambridge auction house, will put most of Barrett's possessions under the hammer, including home-made speakers, books, easels and paints.

Some of the songwriter's homemade furniture will also be available to buy. A spokesperson from Cheffin's told BBC News: "He was passionate about, although not always competent at, DIY."

The sale will take place on November 29 and 30, and the sale will be available to view online at Cheffins.co.uk nearer to the auction date.

'About A Son' Conversations Give A Glimpse Into The Kurt Cobain Few Knew

Interviewer calls Cobain 'a person who a lot of people thought they understood but probably didn't.'

When journalist Michael Azerrad first met Kurt Cobain in 1992, he half-expected to find him shooting up heroin or smashing a guitar or screaming bloody murder into a microphone. After all, that's all he'd heard and read about Cobain � that he was "a known heroin user," a paranoid maniac and an absolute terror to interview.

But instead, at the end of a long hallway in a Los Angeles apartment, Azerrad came toenail-to-painted-toenail with Kurt Cobain: a slightly off-kilter, but ultimately ordinary, 25-year-old.

"All I knew was that he was a guitar-smashing junkie who screamed," Azerrad said. "Courtney [Love] greeted me at the front door of their apartment, and we walked down this long hallway, with a bedroom down at the end. And I was just dreading what I was going to find in that bedroom. But what I found was a man lying in bed, with his feet pointed towards the door. His feet were sticking out from underneath a blanket, and his toenails were painted red. He was extremely nice, told me to come in and sit down. And then he offered me some grapes."

Azerrad interviewed Cobain for a Rolling Stone cover story, but he got more than a feature out of their initial meeting. The two struck up a fast friendship � "We bonded over the fact that both of us were small kids who didn't relate to the jocks in high school," Azerrad laughed � that would last for the remainder of the Nirvana frontman's life.

"Some people have a certain mental picture of him. ... They think he was some sort of gibbering junkie, but he wasn't," Azerrad said. "He was a smart, really insightful guy. He would be the guy you would go to if you had a personal problem and needed to talk to somebody. It sounds ironic, but it was true. He gave out the best advice."

And so in late 1992, when Azerrad brought up the idea of writing a book about Nirvana, Cobain was excited. Over the next few months, he would invite the author out to his Seattle home to do interviews under rather unique conditions.

"I'd fly out to Seattle from New York, and he'd call me and say, 'OK, great, come over at around midnight,' " Azerrad said. "So I would take a nap, and then I'd head over. And we'd start talking, and often keep talking until the sun came up. It was basically a man, in his kitchen, talking to someone he trusts in the wee hours of the morning. The TV was always on. He was a huge 'Speed Racer' fan. He loved Chim Chim the monkey. He'd be sitting in his kitchen wearing ripped jeans and a pajama top."

The two logged nearly 25 hours of interviews, the bulk of which were used in Azerrad's definitive 1993 Nirvana tome "Come as You Are." But a little more than seven months after the book hit stores, Cobain took his own life in the greenhouse of his Lake Washington home, and Azerrad put those interviews on the shelf.

"His death hit me really, really hard, and I couldn't bring myself to listen to the tapes," he said. "I still haven't listened to a Nirvana record since. Maybe I've heard a Nirvana song playing somewhere, but I usually leave the room."

Fast-forward almost a decade, as Azerrad was interviewed for the They Might Be Giants documentary "Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns)." After wrapping the shoot, he struck up a conversation with director AJ Schnack. The two bonded over their admiration of Nirvana, and Azerrad casually mentioned that he had more than a day's worth of interviews with Cobain just sitting in his apartment. And immediately, something clicked in Schnack's mind.

"I thought back to a few years ago, when my nephew was getting into Nirvana," Schnack recalled. "I could tell that everything about it was being filtered through the controversies at the end of Kurt's life: the drug use, the suicide, the tabloid aspects of it. And I thought, 'Wow, it's too bad that for him and his generation, it's always going to be about this iconography.' So pretty much right there, we decided to do something with the tapes."

The two began listening to the Cobain interviews, jotting down notes at key points and discussing just how to make these incredibly revealing sound bites into a film. And strangely, both had the same idea: Let's just make the tapes the film.

"We didn't want to call it a documentary," Azerrad said. "We'd call it a nonfiction film, because it wasn't really going to trace a journalistic narrative. It became more of an intimate visit with a person who a lot of people thought they understood but probably didn't. You're listening to him talk in these very intimate conversations, and you get a feeling that I don't think anyone has ever gotten from Kurt. He talks about his generation � the world as it was when he was a kid and the world it became later."

"It won't fit into what anyone is expecting about a Kurt Cobain documentary, and it's not a traditional rock doc," Schnack added. "There's no archival footage in the film, and Kurt only appears at the very end. Basically it's the chance to sit with his voice and listen to him tell his story."

The end result of their two-year collaboration is "Kurt Cobain About a Son," a film that reveals the man behind the larger-than-life persona. Based on 90 minutes of conversation taken from the tapes, coupled with ethereal, ambient photography shot in the Washington towns of Aberdeen (where Cobain was born), Olympia (where he spent his late teens) and Seattle (where he died), it's a documentary only in the loosest sense of the word. Rather, through Cobain's own, unguarded conversations, the film weaves a personal, haunting bio of the man very few knew.

"Kurt has become a cipher over the past 12 years, where people have built up a very ironclad opinion of what they think he was, based on speculation and gossip and some books," Azerrad said. "But there is nothing like hearing the man himself speak. You can hear the tone of his voice. He speaks very candidly sometimes; at various points he's talking with his mouth full; at various times you can hear him smoking a cigarette. And on one level he's just another guy, and on another level, you realize that he was a very, very special man."

Aside from Cobain's narrative, the film is also punctuated throughout by the music he loved � well-documented favorites like the Melvins and David Bowie of course, but also lesser-known faves like Queen, R.E.M. and Cheap Trick. Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Pacific Northwest producer Steve Fisk (who helmed sessions for almost every regional band of note, including Nirvana) also provide a plaintive, ambient soundtrack.

"In our conversations, it was incredibly apparent that Kurt was a walking encyclopedia of music," Azerrad laughed. "Music played an important part of his development as a person and as an artist. So it was imperative to have that music in the film."

"About a Son" will make its worldwide debut on September 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival, and after that Schnack and Azerrad hope to take the film nationwide. But they both want potential viewers to be warned: The film is far from easy viewing.

Schnack and Azerrad insist that nothing involving the life of Cobain should be categorized as "easy."

"I've only showed the film to my girlfriend, and she was like, 'I'm really shaken by this,' " Azerrad said. "It's very intense. You don't watch it and think, 'Oh, this is pleasant. I feel like I know him much better now.' You're going to walk out of the theater and need a minute to collect yourself. He's brutally honest in a way, and that only helps to tear down the 12 years of mythologizing and cartoonish overstatement and speculation of his life. It just leaves you feeling stripped."

"The movie is funny in a way and brutal in others. And listening to his voice, coupled with the visuals of the places he lived, it's both mesmerizing and haunting," Schnack added. "You get the feeling that he was an ordinary guy � with problems and issues � who sort of became famous despite that. He was this really extraordinary ordinary man."

NEW YORK (Billboard) -- Heavy metal maven Dave Mustaine is so angry with the United Nations that he is naming his group Megadeth's next album "United Abominations."

"I was watching TV and saw the trucks that said 'UN' on them and said, 'Man, you are so uncool, ineffective, anything," the singer/guitarist said in a recent Billboard interview.

"I thought, 'Wow, I've got to run with this. I got it -- United Abominations, 'cause it's an abomination what they're doing!' "

The longtime bane of American conservatives, the United Nations has been criticized for its slow responses to humanitarian crises in hot spots such as Darfur and Rwanda. U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan recently expressed frustration that the group took so long to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Mustaine said Megadeth is putting the finishing touches on the album, its debut for indie label Roadrunner Records, and it should be ready "some time next year."

"We're taking our time with this one," Mustaine said. "It's a great feeling to make a record and not have our feet held to the fire. One of my heroes growing up was Kiss, but they really frustrated me 'cause they would put out a record just about every year. I couldn't figure that out. I pretty much have a cycle of about 18 months to 24 months between records. I just can't put them out any quicker than that and feel comfortable about them."

Megadeth's last album, "The System Has Failed," was released by Sanctuary in 2004.

Mustaine expects Megadeth to tour heavily in support of "United Abominations," perhaps into 2008. In the meantime, the group is gearing up for the September 6 start of the second Gigantour traveling heavy metal festival in Boise. The tour, which also features Lamb of God, Opeth and Arch Enemy, runs through October 8 in Orlando, Florida.

So what does Amputechture mean?

Rodriguez-Lopez: "Amputechture" is just a word that was invented by our friend. The amputechture of the word [laughs] is "to amputate" and "architecture"-the word in and of itself is kind of describing itself, its own process. It's just something we really love the sound of; it makes so many images in the head of exactly what it can be. And we realized it was very fitting for the process of the group, because the approach is to try to cut out old parts to make way for new parts and just kind of get rid of certain things that we're used to doing in order to make room for brand new concepts.

Is there a thematic string like there was on Frances the Mute?

Rodriguez-Lopez: The theme of this album was to not have a theme, to approach it more as a series of vignettes or a series of stories whose only true unifying theme would be the voice in which they're being told. We were very inspired by Night Gallery; every episode is telling a different story, but there's still the introduction by Rod Serling and a certain feeling there.

What impact did it make to have Paul [Hinojos, a former At the Drive-In bandmate] as part of the recording process this time?

Rodriguez-Lopez: It made things a lot easier for me. The most important thing is Paul's place in our lives-Paul's personality, our friendship with Paul. Obviously we've been in another band with him for years, so there's just this familiarity and this comfort of being around him. And it really freed me up as the leader of the band, as the producer of the record. Between him and also having John Frusciante playing guitar, who essentially became a band member for the record, I was able to teach them their parts and then just sit behind the console and really listen to the sound of the band and have an objective view of what we were doing.

So are you trying to lure John away from the Chili Peppers?

Rodriguez-Lopez: [Laughs] Oh, I don't think that'll happen. But he's like an honorary member of our band. He's always welcome to be part of the band, in any way. He's so part of the energy of what this band is and gets along so well with everyone-I mean, he's my closest friend next to Cedric. He, as a person, is very Mars Volta. He's always around, and because of this we're in very subtle ways and very obvious ways always influencing each other and the directions of what we're doing with our bands.

Just writing to let you know I'm back in Austin.... but the trip back was not without incident. On a typical 100+ degree day in this hellish state of Texas, the car broke down less than halfway back in another shit-kicker town... had to get towed back to my Mom's, then the next day we had to buy a new alternator. We were hoping to let the check bounce so we had some money til Friday, but it turns out checks go through electronically at-the-moment now, which left my Dad and I with basically no money... but as I was telling my friend earlier, these kinda things make you appreciate it more when things are ok in the present... and right now I'm back at the house staying out of the heat so until my next moment of pain and sadness I will try my best to enjoy myself as much as possible, although I truely feel traumatized from a combination of so many things. Thanks again to all the kind words of support and encouragement I've received lately, reminding me that my faith in my music is not misplaced or misguided.

Alice In Chains Unlock North American Fall Tour

Grunge icons' 40-date jaunt begins September 22 in Las Vegas.

Earlier this year, the surviving members of Alice in Chains traveled across the U.S. to play a mere six club dates, recruiting Comes With the Fall frontman William DuVall to stand in for the late Layne Staley.

Well, as you'd expect, the response to those gigs was overwhelming, with each selling out (see "Alice In Chains Unveil Handful Of U.S. Club Dates" and "Alice In Chains Wrap Up String Of U.S. Club Dates In New York"). So now, the band has decided to head back out this fall, having booked a total of 40 gigs, sprinkled throughout the U.S., with one date in Canada.

The tour will get underway September 22 in Las Vegas and run through November 26 in San Francisco, with additional dates being added over the next few weeks. It remains unclear whether the newly reunited Chains will record new material with DuVall any time soon, but guitarist Jerry Cantrell said in February that it was a remote possibility. It's also uncertain whether DuVall, who was once a member of Cantrell's touring band, has been made a permanent member of the group (see "Remaining Alice In Chains Members Reuniting For Summer Gigs").

Tickets for all dates will be available through a fan-club presale via Alice in Chains' Web site beginning Monday, and the general public will have the chance to scoop them up on August 19. The band will be supported on this run by hard-rock outfit Hurt.

Alice in Chains will be touring, in part, in support of the forthcoming The Essential Alice in Chains, which will land in stores September 5. The two-disc collection is the first comprehensive Chains retrospective release, with 28 tracks culled from all four of the band's four LPs (1990's Facelift, 1992's Dirt, 1995's self-titled release and 1996's "acoustic" MTV Unplugged) and two EPs (1992's Sap and 1994's Jar of Flies), along with remixes of the two Alice tracks that appeared on the "Last Action Hero" soundtrack.

Flea says 'Tell Me Baby' clip is 'the most beautiful piece of film that has ever represented us.'

CHICAGO � It's almost like a warped episode of "Making the Band" or "Rock Star."

In the video for "Tell Me Baby," the second single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' latest double-LP, Stadium Arcadium, fans of the funk-rock scoundrels will see the members of the group � frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith � vying against complete unknowns in what seems to be an audition for a spot in the Chilis.

The clip was helmed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer), the directorial team behind several Red Hot videos including "Californication," "Otherside" and "By the Way" and the new independent film "Little Miss Sunshine." And according to Flea, it's "the best video of our career." The bassist even feels the clip is "the most beautiful piece of film that has ever represented us."

The video features several dozen fresh-faced actors, musicians and dancers, all a bundle of nerves before heading into an audition room. The Chili Peppers are among those lingering about in various waiting rooms, anxiously anticipating their moment to shine. In the clip, the Chilis are all matched with total strangers for their try-outs, which is a common practice in auditions to gauge chemistry between performers.

Each of the Peppers is grouped with different musicians, playing together in pairs, and then in threes and fours. The unknown musicians are eliminated, one by one, until the Red Hots are finally reunited. The directors wanted to capture the tension between the individual bandmembers as they rocked out with unsigned and would-be musicians.

Dayton and Faris also kept those musicians in the dark about which band they might be performing with for the video � the duo wanted to ensure they'd catch the look of surprise on their faces when, say, Kiedis strolled into the audition room to take his place behind the microphone.

"[Dayton and Faris] had a great idea that really went with the song and the lyrics and it was just so much fun to do a video that lots of other people were involved with," said Flea backstage at last weekend's Lollapalooza (see "Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West And More Rock Out At Lollapalooza 2006"). "The excitement of all the kids that were in the video, and to just be a kid among kids, doing something fun � it made it really fun.

"Making videos can often be a real boring, long, arduous day," he continued. "You know, you think it's this glamorous rock-star fun thing: lots of hot chicks in their underwear and rock stars running around, rappers in baggy pants with big muscles. But let me tell you, making videos can be a really boring, hot day. But making this video was just a big, wild ball of fun."

The "Tell Me Baby" video's debut comes on the heels of last week's announcement that the Chili Peppers' "Dani California" is in the running for seven MTV Video Music Awards at the August 31 ceremony, including "Video of the Year," "Best Group Video," "Best Rock Video" and "Best Direction in a Video" (see "Shakira, Chili Peppers, Madonna, Panic! In a few days, the Peppers will embark on a 26-date North American tour that begins August 11 in Portland, Oregon, and concludes in St. Paul, Minnesota, on November 5 (See "Red Hot Chili Peppers Reveal Stadium Arcadium Tour Dates"); the Mars Volta have been tapped as the opener for the run.

Rapper Mos Def conjures "Magic" on new album

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Rapper Mos Def makes an uncharacteristically quick return next month with a new studio album, "Tru3 Magic."

The Geffen Records set, due September 19, boasts production from Pharrell Williams, Kayne West and Rich Harrison, among others.

And while the track list has yet to be announced, "Tru3 Magic" will be led by the track "Boogie Man," a spare track featuring prominent piano lines, live drumming and shout-outs to Mos Def's native Brooklyn as well as newscaster Walter Cronkite.

"Tru3 Magic" is the follow-up to 2004's "The New Danger," which has sold 445,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That was Mos Def's first solo album since 1999's acclaimed "Black on Both Sides."

Always in demand as an actor, Mos Def has four projects in various states of completion, including "The Brazilian Job," the sequel to 2003's "The Italian Job." He also makes a cameo alongside Elvis Costello in Will Ferrell's current box office smash "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."

Hello, hello, hey, hi. I've not written for a bit so I thought I'd provide an update. I got into a big fight with my dad, who lives near Austin, last weekend. It was very unpleasant and completely instigated by him, as has been the case time and time again. I had a bit of a breakdown over it, and went to see my Mom who lives in a shit-kicker town called Stephenville. Apparently Jewel lives here lol. Anyway I'm not sure when or if I will return to my former residency, as the bad feelings continue to simmer for me.... I'm in a weird space, in my head, right now.... getting used to not smoking pot everyday like I'd been doing for a long time, and coping with some very heavy stuff involving both parents... I won't indulge you on the details as they are kinda private. But I'd say my outlook has improved since earlier this week when I was becoming suicidal... I'm just being honest with you. I haven't done any music in a while, I'd like to but it's just as I said, a weird time. And I continuously feel weird about whether I'll have any success as an artist, getting it out there to people, touring, etc. as that situation just doesn't really seem to improve much. But I remain optimistic, however naively that might be. My playlist is not as extensive as it normally is - I've really only been listening to a few records consistently. They are :

This DVD has some of the best skateboard footage ever captured on tape, John Frusciante was at this show in 1988 at Devonshire Downs, Bad Religion one of his favorites. Mars Volta's Amputechture Inspired By Immigrant Marches, Possessed Nuns

The Mars Volta revived the concept album in 2005 with their cerebral opus Frances the Mute. The epic LP centered on the thoughts of a man seeking out his adopted parents.

Those musings were contained within a diary discovered by former Volta bandmate Jeremy Ward while he was employed as a repo man. Before Ward's 2003 death from an apparent overdose, he took it upon himself to finish the unknown writer's work. The band's frontman, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, later used the writings as a blueprint of sorts for Frances (see "Mars Volta's Conceptual Frances The Mute Speaks Volumes").

For the Volta's forthcoming conceptual offering, Amputechture, which hits stores September 12, Bixler-Zavala didn't rely on just one source of inspiration for his lyrics � there was plenty on his mind this time around.

"It's all loose, really," he explained. "I love the way that [Rod Serling's 1970s series] 'Night Gallery' had that common thread that it was a gallery, and every painting told a different story. I guess I'd like that to be true of this album, too. The subject matter's all different, but [the songs] do all come together in a strange way. Every song would be a different episode that kind of relates in the way that [Paul Thomas Anderson's 1999 film] 'Magnolia' has all these different characters [who] all come back together in the end.

"There's the subject of the immigrant marches that were happening here," Bixler-Zavala continued. "And there were things I saw on the news, like the story about a woman who was killed by this priest because supposedly she was possessed."

That woman was a 23-year-old Romanian nun named Maricica Irina Cornici, who, according to news reports, believed she heard the devil talking to her. A monk bound Cornici to a cross, gagged her with a towel and left her in a dank room for three days without food. She died of suffocation and dehydration more than a year ago.

"That was sort of an inspiration to write about the Western phenomenon of incarcerating somebody if you think they're crazy, whereas in some parts of the world, like in South America, people like this woman would be considered a shaman," the singer said.

But that's not where it ends.

"This album's a commentary about the fear of God instead of the love of God, which goes hand-in-hand with Catholicism," he said. "To me, religion is the reason there is so much conflict in this world, and I think it's just so unnecessary to believe in this blue-eyed, white-bearded, white-haired God. Amputechture is my personal way of describing enlightenment, or just the celebration of this person who is a shaman and not a crazy person. It's about the pineal gland and how it has certain elements that mimic a DMT experience, and how we can come up with cures for cancer and AIDS if we're more in tune with what's going on in the rainforest."

Bixler-Zavala says the Volta started recording Amputechture last year while on tour with System of a Down (see "System Of A Down/ Mars Volta Tour Dates Announced"). Guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez produced the LP, which features eight ethereal tracks.

"We're excited about this album, because I think a lot of people expected us to rest on Frances and keep promoting that," Bixler-Zavala said. "It's great to just keep going and throw new stuff out there. We have the kind of fanbase that demands that. But we're constantly working, or else we get bored."

Rodriguez-Lopez, who is working on music for Guillermo Arriaga's forthcoming film "The Night Buffalo" as well as his own, five-years-in-the-making movie, had a virtual library of ideas he brought to the table for Amputechture, which features the Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante playing the majority of the album's guitar parts.

"We took an approach on this album of not letting everyone know what's going on with the music," Bixler-Zavala said. "Everyone went in and recorded their part right then and there. Frusciante learned his part five minutes before we'd go in to record it, and the entire album was recorded in big chunks. It's the closest thing to improvisation we can do."

This fall, the Mars Volta will open for the Chili Peppers on the band's North American tour, set to kick off August 11 in Portland, Oregon, and conclude November 5 in St. Paul, Minnesota (see "Red Hot Chili Peppers Reveal Stadium Arcadium Tour Dates"). Afterward, Bixler-Zavala said the Volta will stage their own U.S. headlining tour, which should commence before year's end, with dates running well into 2007.

- TMV just lost the most amazing drummer they'll ever have. They idiolize King Crimson for it's continuing line up changes, but Crimson they are not. The only other drummer they could get to out do Jon Theodore is Zach Hill from Hella, who toured with TMV and System of a Down last year. Rock Daily Exclusive: Modest Marr!

We�ve known for a while that Modest Mouse leader Isaac Brock and former Smiths guitarist/genius Johnny Marr were collaborating on MM�s next record. But guess what? Marr is now officially a full-on member of Modest Mouse, Brock recently told us. According to Brock, Marr�s membership is so unequivocal, he will tour with MM in support of their next record, tentatively titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and tentatively due this fall. �He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, �okay, let�s tour too,�� Brock said. �Then he was pretty much a member of the band - not pretty much. He�s a full blown member of the band. It�s really fuckin� nice.�

Some backstory: When it came time to start work on the follow-up to 2004�s indie-rock marvel Good News for People Who Love Bad News, Brock found himself sans guitarist and enlisted Marr to help write and record. �I took a long shot really,� says Brock. �I was like, �You know, I really like that guy�s guitar playing. There�s no chance in hell he�s going to say yes, but why not give him a call?� So I did.� Maybe Morrissey should borrow Brock�s little black book? �Eventually it all came together, and it was a really good fit, which I think actually surprised all of us,� Brock recalled. Finally, Marr, Brock and co. went down to Sweet Tea studios in Mississippi (the same joint where Good News was recorded) to lay down tracks for We Were Dead, which Brock describes as a nautical balalaika carnival romp. So what�s the gist? Get ready to have your mind blown by Modest Marr�s crazy-dark sailors-and-gypsies whimsy.

Rocker Arthur Lee dies in Memphis

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Arthur Lee, the eccentric singer/guitarist with influential 1960s rock band Love, has died in a Memphis hospital after a battle with leukemia, his manager said on Friday. He was 61.

"His death comes as a shock to me because Arthur had the uncanny ability to bounce back from everything, and leukemia was no exception," Mark Linn said in an email to Reuters. "He was confident that he would be back on stage by the fall."

Lee died on Thursday at about 5 p.m. EDT (2200 GMT) at Methodist University Hospital with his wife Diane at his side, Linn added.

Lee, a Memphis native who referred to himself as "the first so-called black hippie," formed Love in Los Angeles in 1965, emerging from the same scene as groups like the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Doors and the Mamas and Papas.

The first multiracial rock band of the psychedelic era, Love recorded three groundbreaking albums fusing traditional folk rock and blues with symphonic suites and early punk.

Bands as diverse as Led Zeppelin, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Siouxsie and the Banshees cited Love as an influence.

The band's self-titled 1966 debut yielded the hit single "My Little Red Book," written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. The 1967 follow-up, "Da Capo," was one of the first rock albums to feature a song, "Revelation," that took up an entire side. "Da Capo" featured Love's only other Top 40 hit, "Seven & Seven Is."

The group's third release, 1967's "Forever Changes," which boasted adventurous horn and string arrangements, is considered Love's bold response to the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's" album. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at No. 40 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

But Love, which rarely left Los Angeles, lost momentum as Lee hired new musicians and pursued a solo career. Various reunions amounted to little, and Lee's eccentricities landed him in a California prison for six years during the 1990s for firing a pistol into the air.

After his release in late 2001, Lee assembled a new version of Love and toured Europe and North America, often playing "Forever Changes" in its entirety.

Lee was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia this year. In May, facing certain death after three rounds of chemotherapy failed, he became the first adult in Tennessee to undergo a bone marrow transplant using stem cells from an umbilical cord, according to The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal.

Doctors said the procedure lifted his chances of survival only moderately, the newspaper said.

Several benefit concerts were held in Britain and the United States to help Lee with his medical bills. Former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant headlined a benefit in New York in June.

I am going to see them at the nokia theatre. Has anyone been to the nokia theatre? any comments? personally, i'm not all too excited about seeing rollins band because i know their crowd can get very rowdy. Oh yeah, does anyone know of any good bands coming soon to nyc?

The disc will feature 16 cuts, all plucked from the band's discography � there will be no fresh or unreleased tracks on the record.         i still can't believe he's gone. i've been listening to 'madcap...' non-stop and i get sad when 'dark globe' comes on. i think one of the reasons i'm so sad is b/c i JUST found this man: after hearing you (ian) going on about him all this time i finally got 'madcap..' earlier this year and fell instantly in love. it's kinda like when you're at a party and you meet somone you REALLY like and just when you're really getting into the conversation, their friend or whatever taps them on them on the shoulder and says, 'it's time to go.' and just like that they get up and go. you feel a little lost for words and your heart hurts just a bit. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Killers, Who, Raconteurs To Play Virgin Festival

It's not every day that you get a chance to see the Who on a multi-act festival bill in the U.S., especially not one featuring the Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flaming Lips and the Raconteurs. But all those bands, plus Gnarls Barkley, Scissor Sisters and Keane have signed on for the first-ever Virgin Festival, which will take place September 23 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

The day-long fest at the 140-year-old racetrack was inspired by its decade-old English counterpart, the V Festival. The event will also feature a DJ tent with sets by John Digweed, Carl Cox, RJD2, DJ Ti�sto, James Holden and 2 Many DJs, as well as interactive art installations, performance art and booths with information from non-profits and social-action groups, according to a press release announcing the show. Other acts playing the main stage include Thievery Corporation, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, New Pornographers, Drive-By Truckers, Kasabian, Brazilian Girls and Wolfmother.

"People expect the unexpected from Virgin," Virgin founder/chairman Sir Richard Branson said in a statement. "By creating a music festival that goes beyond expectations, we strive to make the overall live experience explosive and unique."

The festival, which organizers expect will draw approximately 60,000 people, is being produced by I.M.P., owners of Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club. Chairman Seth Hurwitz said he was looking to do something different with the Virgin Fest. "With all of the great festivals here in the U.S., it was a real challenge to take a different approach," Hurwitz said. "I wanted to create a show where every act was important � total quality vs. quantity, the absolute best of what's out there as opposed to the most. When people hear this lineup, they will understand exactly what I mean."

Tickets for the show are $97.50.
