Re: Recruiting -- Mike, 11:56:49 03/10/06 Fri
CCSU just made an offer to Johnson, Niagara & Wisc-GB have offers with him also (Akron offered but was already rejected). How many Scholarships does Howie have to offer? I count 1 from D.A. 1 from J.Williams, and 2 graduates. Minus Myers leaves 3. Offers are on the table to Patrick Hazel, Brian Johnson & Nick Murphy...that leaves zero by my count...what about Hard Hittin New Britain superstar Diedrick King???

Johnson commits to CCSU -- J.J., 16:57:40 03/14/06 Tue
This is a different "Johnson," but it sounds like good news from the Delaware News Journal:
By Buddy Hurlock
3/14/06
Once Darrell Johnson finished a college visit last week, it did not take long to decide that was the school for him.
Johnson, a 6-foot-4 Howard senior, made his verbal commitment to Central Connecticut State University last Friday, two days after visiting the campus in New Britain, Conn., a suburb of Hartford.
"I was that overwhelmed," said Johnson, who earlier made official visits to Delaware and Marist. Johnson expects to sign in the late period that starts April 12.
Central Connecticut State, with almost 9,700 undergraduates, plays in the Northeast Conference. The Blue Devils went 18-11 this season, including a 79-73 loss at Delaware, and lost in the semifinals of the NEC Tournament to eventual champ Monmouth (N.J.).
The team will graduate two of four guards on the roster, a situation that favors Johnson.
"Coach [Howie Dickenman] said if I come in and work, there shouldn't be any reason why I can't start," Johnson said. "Getting strong and adjusting to the speed is the biggest change from high school to college, and that's what I'll have to work on."

You never know, but I would rather of had the other Johnson. I hope this doesn't make other potential guards think twice about signing. Can we get some size please?

I read another article about him that said he just started playing basketball last year or two years ago, I believe. His upside must be insane, which makes him a perfect pickup.

Day of decision for Tyrone Lewis -- J.J., 11:16:52 04/10/06 Mon
The great Tyrone Lewis mystery will be solved today. Harry S Truman High has called a 2 p.m. news conference this afternoon to announce where the all-time leading boys basketball scorer in Lower Bucks history will be headed.
A source with knowledge of the situation said Sunday night that while nothing was "definite," Niagara is the favorite at this time. Central Connecticut State also is in the running.
Lewis returned to the area Sunday night after visiting Ohio University, which no longer appears in the hunt.
If Lewis was to attend Niagara, he would be coached by long-time La Salle assistant Joe Mihalich. Mihalich was a coach of Mike Stock, the current Truman coach who played at La Salle.
Central Connecticut State jumped late in the mix and was making a strong push last week.
Lewis scored 2,211 points in his career and helped the Tigers to consecutive PIAA tournament appearances for the first time in school history.

Any other prospects out there in the wings???
Truman star falls for Niagara
By KEVIN COONEY
Bucks County Courier Times
LEVITTOWN — By the time Tyrone Lewis pulled the purple cap onto his head, you could almost see the relief and the joy mixed in his eyes at the same time.
The relief of having the recruiting process concluded. The joy of a lifelong dream that's about to become reality.
“People kept telling me that I could never go and play basketball in college, that I didn't have the type of game that they were looking for,” Lewis said. “We'll, there's a certain amount of satisfaction that I proved them wrong.”
Yes, he did. Lewis, the talented guard from Harry S Truman who was the all-time leading scorer in Lower Bucks County history with 2,211 points, announced Monday that he will attend Niagara University in the fall.
Niagara edged out Central Connecticut State, one of the first schools to contact him.
“I really wished I could go to both schools,” said Lewis, who plans on majoring in education. “Both schools had shown tremendous interest in me all along. Both coaches were great guys. Both programs were top-notch. But I knew that I had to make the choice.”
What convinced Lewis to head to Niagara was the strength of the Purple Eagles' schedule. Under former La Salle assistant Joe Mihalich, who coached Truman coach Mike Stock in the late 1980s as an assistant on Speedy Morris' staff, Niagara has been among the top teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference the past seven years.
“It's a tougher conference [than CCSU's Northeast Conference], and you have a chance to go into the NCAAs every year,” Lewis said. “It just felt like the right fit for me.”
Despite his gawdy high school numbers, Lewis was not exactly a hot commodity on the Division I recruiting front up until the end. The main reason was his 6-foot size and his status as a “tweener” between shooting guard and point guard.
Temple contacted Stock, but there wasn't a fit. Ditto with La Salle, which was actively looking for big men in this recruiting class. Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli reportedly was in attendance at the Tigers' game against Neumann-Goretti (which featured Hawks' recruit D.J. Rivera), but never showed interest.
“There are small guys who can play at any level,” Lewis said. “I know there were some schools who didn't really recruit me because of that, and that's fine. I just have to prove them wrong.”

Re: Recruiting -- J.J., 08:46:07 04/11/06 Tue
We tried hard. He would have been a nice fit! I hate to say it, but it is very hard to recruit in the NEC, yet I am impressed with what we pull off each year. But this is the quote I hate:
“It's a tougher conference [than CCSU's Northeast Conference], and you have a chance to go into the NCAAs every year,” Lewis said. “It just felt like the right fit for me.”
Of course we have the same shot to make it to the NCAAs as Niagara, but the NEC reputation sucks!
