here are the tentative non-conference hoops opponents: Sanford, Cal-State Fullerton, Colgate (those 3 in the MS Classic on campus), at Niagara, Florida International, at LaSalle, at UConn (HCC), at the Cable Car Classic at Santa Clara (Santa Clara, Charlotte, and Yale), and Loyola...

Thanks for the info! I guess that it is an OK schedule, but not real exciting. What is your read on it?

Only one $ game (at UConn). Don't we need at least 1 more BCS type team to write us a check?

The Mohegan Sun tourney is winnable, but kind of boring for an early season tune up - Samford and Colgate. I do like the CS-Fullerton pick because they are National champs in baseball, so maybe we can get the baseball team a trip to CA in the spring.

Return game at Niagara (NIT team) is nice, and a trip to Philly for LaSalle is a decent A-10 replacement for UMass.

The Cable Car Tourney is really the most interesting for the team. I mean you get a nice trip out West and after a game with the host you play either CUSA's Charlotte or Yale. How did Santa Clara find this field for the tourney?

And finally at home vs. FIU and Loyola. I know you've mentioned it is difficult for CCSU to schedule games, especially at home, but this is very weak. When is that Loyola contract over? They are the worst team in the country and it kills your RPI just playing them even with a win. IMHO its just a no win situation for Central. What happened to Hartford? Do they want to play us? Other than UConn and a possible game vs. Yale we have no New England rivals on the schedule. How about games with BU, NU, or Vermont?

I agree with JJ. It would have been nice to play some local teams in the early season. I am going to miss the UMASS game at Mohegan. It was nice to go to the Sun and watch a good game at the Arena. I REALLY miss the Phoenix classic. That was always a decent showcase of local Hoops talent *other* than UCONN.

I guess UMASS got tired of losing to us :)

I gues my only problem with the OCC schedules is that this really does feel like the team is building on last years schedule.

Also, is there going to be a better television presence? The few in conference games on on MSG .. I cant see on comcast! and it would be great to see some of the OCC home games like the Q has on channel 20??

Each one of those games costs the Q about $15,000...there isn't that kind of money floating around at CCSU.

I knew QU had to pay something for those extra games on TV and if they can't get advertisers to cover their costs it can be very expensive. I agree Central doesn't have the $ for that and unfortunately I think that might give QU an edge in the future because CCSU is on a tight budget and QU has a lot more financial resources. As for televised games, I have DirectTV so I can only see games on ESPN, FOX SportsNet, NESN or MSG, but I guess any games on TV (Cablevision, local networks, CPTV, Public access, etc.) aren't bad for the school as long as someone else is paying for it.

But actually the budget situation was my first question about the schedule - why only 1 "payday" game? Unlike football we can keep close with bigger programs, so shouldn’t we have 2 more paychecks? I just figured we could use the money.

You answered your own question. Why would a higher-profile team want to pay a school to come in and possibly beat them?

Agreed, that is something to be worked on but hopefully the entire production this season resembles more the Cox broadcasts than the Nutmeg ones. Nutmeg has very limited resources, thus the poor video quailty and the shabby production.

I guess you are right J.J. Any TV exposure is good...

If Central is going to go with Nutmeg in televising some games this season, I just wish that the Nutmeg Production was a little better. I taped some of the games and it looked like they were playing ball in a cave. Too dark!

[> LaSalle and SCSU -- J.J., 17:08:35 07/27/04 Tue

I know the schedule you listed was tentative, but will the recent LaSalle coaching situation change anything for us? Also, since NCAA rules won't allow exhibitions against non-NCAA teams like the Beltwaly Ballers, etc. will we invite a DII team for an exhibition? How about Southern Conn.?

The recent situation with LaSalle whouldn't change anything. Also, a scrimmage with SCSU is probably unlikely. The team "scrimmages" Stony Brook prior to each season.
