Subject: FB Team Moving?

During a past interview, it was mentioned that the CCSU football program was looking to soften up their schedule.

I was wondering if that meant that the football team is going to join the MAAC conference, where all the schools are non-scholarship?

Anybody have any information on this?

soften up their schedule? What does that mean? Why would CCSU leave the NEC for the MAAC, the NEC isn't exactly a powerhouse league. And noone in the league gives out full scholarships, it's all need-based aid and scholarships in the NEC. And what past interview would anyone ever say "soften-up"? The only thing that has ever been said is that CCSU will no longer open playing two A-10 teams, that's not softening up, that's just good sense.

That doessn't seem to make aany sense to me either. The NEC is about the weakest conference in the country. Maybe, they meant the few non-conference games they play?

Inquirer - It makes no sense for any NEC team to join the MAAC! Softening our OOC schedule (non A-10 teams) seems to be the intent.

However, I do have a question: according to a pre-season IAA mid-major poll, CCSU is ranked #13. How can a team that finished 3-8 last season be ranked so high in a "national poll?" - because their are only 24 or so teams. There are more teams playing DI ice hockey! We can't move down 'cus their is nowhere to go and it appears we don't have the $ or support to step up.

I just don't understand this split of IAA football teams into the "mid major" category. Why are there 2 sets of scholarship levels for IAA football (which is already a subcategory of DI)? Also, shouldn't the PL and Ivy teams be considered "mid-major" because they do not have athletic scholarships, but use "grant-in-aid" like the NEC? I for one wish that the rules - whatever they are - were the same for all IAA teams. Then if a team wanted to step up (Delaware or UMass) they could go IA like UConn and Buffalo did. That just seems eaiser to understand.

not all PL schools are need based-only schools. Otherwise, how could a team like Colgate make it to the IAA finals?

Here is the reason why there is a split. All of your programs have to be equated, same level (I, II, III), with a few exceptions out there of course for non-major sports (Merrimack hockey for example). In order for CCSU, or other schools, to have a football program, it has to be DI (or IAA) because the athletic department is a DI department...the mid-major level allows that to happen without putting the millions of dollars into the program that a normal IAA team would. Does it cause confusion, absolutely, basically it makes the mid-majors a glorified DIII program.
