There was a loud crack of thunder very close to my window, rattling the panes, and an audible explosion in my computer room which is also the bedroom. The BigGuy upstairs was throwing me the brushback pitch just to let me know he is watching and could have (strike) me anytime. Anyways, the strike fried my modem, smoked my sound card, and did a host of other naughty things to my computer keeping me from posting til now. We have been quietly reeling in good numbers of rainbows and steelheads on Salmon river, It's tributaries (mostly River diversions), and select northern creeks. North and South Sandy have been off color and producing good catches on Chartreuse and pink egg bags. Although they are quite high and somewhat discolored, the color is keeping the steelie ropers at bay, and high water is keep the fish safe and biting for those who really fish. The LONG LEADER LAW DEBATE has erupted in my absence and I guess I'll weigh in on the side of the TRUE FISHERMAN. There is nothing inherently wrong with a long leader, or a J-plug for that matter. Only when in the hands of a determined purpetrator does it become an instrument of steelhead torture. If people didn't abuse the j-plug or the LONG LEADER, there would be no reason to add another law. In a perfect world, everybody fishes nice and fish always bite whatever we throw, with no need to outsmart the omnipotent superpowered eyesight and "CONEHEADVISIONANGLE" of the wary, or is it weary? steelhead trout. My guess is that when Mr Metaldome morphs into his full radar alert untouchable, unapproachable, stay away from me with dat stuff attitude, he simply isn't interested in ANY LENGTH LEADER, and he won't hit a "hunnerd fuut ledder"!!! He's not opening his mouth for nothing. I've fished steelhead since the sixties on finger Lakes Tribs, Most Great Lakes Tribs, and I've NEVER used a leader longer that FOUR FEET. The Days I don't catch fish are the days they aren't biting, or the days I miscalculated and was in the wrong spot. It's got nothing to do with leader length or my lack of a mechanical, working understanding of water hydraulics or fish behaivor or any of that rot. Fish bite when they are ready to bite. If They are so pressured out of their gords that they are afraid of small split shot and light leader then they aren't gonna hit anyways, regardless of how long your leader is. This game's been being played for a lot longer than the current crop of legends have been around with their hokis Poke-is, slight of hand, magical size #22 blue earwig flies being Flicked by HERR Schlickmeister. POKEMON is still a snagger by whatever name you want to call his or her technique. Bernie Haney is dead-on RIGHT when he calls for Some, Heck ANY, LAW ENFORCEMENT PRESENCE and a ONE FISH LIMIT. A Long Leader is not Wrong. A long Leader in the hands of a GOON snagging under the guise of Fly fishing simply to have one on, for maximum reportable, POSTABLE BODYCOUNT is....... Legit fishermen are not against long leaders but something, anything has got to be done. Good fishing. walleyed out.
