I first saw DW in Hamlet in 65 at Stratford when I was 13. I saw the production twice and it blew me away. I also saw him as Sir Andrew in Twelfth night. The film Morgan also made a big impression although I have to admit I haven't pursued his film career that closely, theatre is my main love.
It brought back a lot of memories when I saw him on stage on Monday. FOS is certainly not a great play but nowhere near as bad as the critics made out. I find DW physically an interesting actor (a hint of vulnerability ?) so the play's inadequacies didn't annoy so much.
When I got to the theatre the bar was totally deserted apart from one other female, we got talking and she turned out to be an actress friend of DW, seeing him for a meal after the show. She was interested in my old programme, offered to take it to him for autographing or to try to make sure he left the theatre promptly.
There were 3 German autograph hunters in front of me and 2 females behind. The rest of the cast left first, then the actress friend came out closely followed by a grinning DW who shouted out -'who's got the old programme?'
He signed for the Germans first, and then left them sorting out pages of piles of books on Shakespeare they wanted signed, and came over to me.
He asked if I'd really seen the Hamlet and if it was at Stratford or in London. He asked how many years ago it was, and his friend told him she knew how old I was at the time. He seemed really thrilled about it. He then asked my name and signed the cast page - 'To Sue, 37 years later, with lots of love DW'. I told him it was really good to see him back on the stage, he thanked me and I wished them both a pleasant meal and left. He was very friendly, full of smiles etc, but it seemed intrusive to linger when he had other autographs to sign and a hungry friend, dying for her curry!
Hope that answers your queries.
DW and his Hamlet has always been special to me - it was the year my father died, so an apt play. Bizarrely last Monday was almost exactly 37 years to the day he died - strange huh?

Aren't they just vultures?

That's like Kathleen Turner's story, and mine too oddly enough. The play really isn't about politics, though the directors always try to make it out to be. It's most basically about burying your dad, but to say that makes it sound boring, doesn't it?
Thanks again! It's nice to hear he's in good spirits.
But the next person to see him needs to ask if he's got another job lined up already!!! ;)

Thanks for the welcome.
Has anyone heard anything about DW's future plans? Sorry, I forgot to ask him in the excitement of the moment!

Have just become HUGE fan of David Warner after seeing his portrayal of Captian Sawyer in Hornblower. Have since been surfing the sites for information. Please explain which theatre you saw DW in and what he was playing. Eteranally grateful, a fellow fan.

I saw David Warner twice last Summer making his Broadway debut in Bernard Shaw's 'Major Barbara'. His performance was magnificent and I had the pleasure of meeting him at the stage door. He's a very nice guy and a true gentleman.

He was at the Lyric in London in Feast of Snails. There are some pages still up at UK newspaper sites, but the play closed on the 16th. I still wish someone would put on Pete Townsend's musical about the Net (before it was even invented!) with him in it, since we all know he can sing. Anyone remember what it was called? I think it had a one-off staging over a year ago, but I couldn't find much about it at all.

So grateful for your prompt reply - I can't stop thinking about him - such I shame I've missed his London stage performance. Will watch this site for news of his next work, be it on tv or film or stage. Feel like I'll go to the end of the earth to see him. Not felt like this since I was a school-girl, I know you will understand how I feel. Kindest regards, Glyn
