Ladies in Lavender came out today in "limited release" in the U.S. Which apparently, according to the IMDb, is only New York City and Los Angeles. So if you're in one of those cities, don't miss the chance to see it. Maybe if it does well, it'll get a wider release. (Not that it'll help in my town, where we didn't get Finding Neverland till three months after everybody else!) Here are a couple of reviews:

I thought LiL would never come here, but it finally opened last week. The reviews I read weren't very enthusiastic, so my expectations were pretty low, but I really ended up enjoying it a lot.

It was a little bit slow-moving and there seemed to be a couple of loose ends left at the end (in particular, a plot point involving DW that got dropped almost as soon as it developed, or maybe I just missed the point of it), but it had an interesting storyline and some sweetly humorous moments. Plus who even needs a plot with all that gorgeous Cornish scenery and such awesome cinematography!

DW was excellent (along with most of the cast, especially Miriam Margolyes!). I know I'm not biased cuz even my friend who wasn't familiar with his work before said without any prompting that he was great. A couple of the reviews pegged his character as a creepy stalker, but just seemed kind of sad to me. In fact, I saw a parallel between his character and Judi Dench's. Also, I'm happy to report that e did not have a beard--although he did have a mustache similar to the one he wore in the beginning of Time After Time. (In fact, seeing him on the big screen again after all this time kind of took me back to that first fateful viewing!) I thought he looked quite handsome--much better than that pretty boy all the women in the story were agog over.

I enjoyed the film so much, I hope to see it again before it closes. Maybe Friday, in honor of DW's birthday?? (The theatre was pretty crowded, so it might actually stick around for a few more weeks.)

So who else has seen it?

SPOILER ALERT:

If anyone understood the dramatic purpose of that espionage accusation, could you please explain? It seemed to go nowhere, since it didn't have anything to do with their leaving town. (Although it did give DW more screen time, so I'm not complaining! Just mildly confused.)

SPOILER ALERT #2:

Another question my friend and I were left with: What ever happened to Natascha McElhone's character in the end? She seemed to have disappeared by the last scene. And why did she reject Andrea after seeming so enamored of him and hitting it off so well? Yet she didn't want DW either? What's wrong with that girl! (My friend and I came up with the following possibilities: she had to hurry back to Russia after her brief Cornish holiday and didn't want to get hurt; she really *did* only like him for his music; or she was already betrothed to someone back home ... Or could there be a sequel in the works in which we find out whatever became of that espionage charge?)

And my friend wanted to know why Andrea washed up in that cove in the first place. I guessed that he was on his way to America and was washed overboard in the storm. (Or was he pushed??? Can anybody make out those voices when they show him in the water? Guess that's another excuse to see it again.)

Other ideas??
