Subject: How does Sync Manager know one Palm from another?

Apparently, the Sync Manager does not base its identification of a handheld on the handheld's assigned "name." I say this because if I use a computer to sync two Palms (with different names) and then change the name of one Palm to match the name of another, the Sync Manager realizes and complains when I try to sync the changed Palm.

I need to understand this because I'm trying to unravel a mystery that involves exactly the issue described except that the renaming was accidental and the pool of Palms is not two but 75! To complicate matters, more than one computer was used to sync the Palms. What we're trying to deduce is what name did the renamed Palm have before it accidentally got renamed.
