Let's start with a few questions:

- What model Palm devices and Palm OS's are we talking about?

- What are you syncing with: Palm Desktop, Outlook or something else? What version?

- What OS is the PC running?

- When you say "the Sync Manager complains", What error message are you getting exactly?

- Let me see if I understand the situation. You have two devices, one with ID "X" and the other with ID "Y". First you sync each one with no problem. Then, for some reason, you changed the ID of "Y" to "X", but are unable to sync?
