There is a book called Outfoxed, written by Alex Ben Block, about the early days of the Fox network. Fascinating stuff in there, particularly as it pertains to Rivers. There is a chapter that describes a very intense affiliates meeting after the mega-bomb of their late night offering, The Wilton North Report.

Their station in Kansas City dumped them and others were about to. According to Block the GM of WPGH played a key role in convincing them to stay. "Fox is spending money on program development, and eventually it will pay off. If we quit, where will that leave us? Any better off than we were before?"

Perhaps single-handedly keeping them alive long enough to make it.
