13Q's "Don't Say Hello" wasn't new — other stations, notably KCBQ in San Diego, had run it before — but to generate awareness of what was an entirely new radio station, it was perfect. Perfect because it got people talking, it spread the word about the station among people who called someone who answered that way, and because it wasn't even necessary to listen to the station to promote it for them — or to win. Listen to the airchecks of some of the winners — they probably hadn't moved their dials from KDKA since 1920.

Here's a link to the original break-the-phone-company contest, done with as much theater of the mind as anyone possibly could in 1972. (And the best part was that all the prizes were tradeouts and most were not given away.) It was never done in Pittsburgh in quite this way, though variations on it were KQV's 1973 Fantasy contest and WWCL's 1985 People's Choice Awards. And of course, Y97 launched in 1982 by breaking the phone company with a much simpler contest, "Who Can It Be Now?"
