When Laurence Gaines died, there was an obit in the Post-Gazette that quoted Doug saying he had trashed almost all of his old tapes. I considered that kind of alarming since it spoke to his disillusionment with how things had turned out for him.

Doug's career here was interesting. He inspired tremendous loyalty among his fans, who followed him up and down the dial and can still quote his catch phrases and bits. But he never had great ratings, especially when he was at KDKA.

When he first came to town and everything was fresh, I thought he'd be a great choice for a national network show in the late night hours, programming pop culture in opposition to the news-oriented shows that were out there. He wound up staying in Pittsburgh for the rest of his career, which I'm guessing is something he didn't expect to do.
