Without a doubt the golden era of Pittsburgh television was the 60s through the mid 70s. WTAE ruled the kids airwaves with Ricki and Copper, Romper Room, and Paul Shannon's Adventure Time. 'TAE had Bowling for Dollars while WIIC had Studio Wrestling. Chiller Theater brought eyeballs to 11 while George Eisenhauer's similar program on KD is long forgotten. At the same time WQED was quietly becoming a public broadcasting powerhouse.

What was on KD? I remember John Reed King's program and Marie Torre's Contact. They also aired Pirates baseball. Hank Stohl was on 2 before moving to 4 (or was it the other way around).

The four TV stations all had busy studios. The commercial stations also produced newscasts. QED had the locally produced Newsroom.

Sadly, most local programming is now news and sports talk. The stations are all showing off how massive their new sets are. WQED is a shadow of its former self.

Sadly, the pendulum is unlikely to swing back to local non-news programming.
