I have no insider information. I only know what I remember from reading here. But, when he was on the air, I went out of my way to never miss his show. As a high school kid, his show was the only radio show I would give up television for to listen to. All the other radio disc jockeys I'd only listen to in the car, or at other times when only radio was available. He played a great collection of music that wasn't readily available on AM radio, and he didn't have all the extraneous filler that cluttered Top 40 radio. His show was, as I remember it, like hanging out with a guy who simply liked to share really great new music. I was a little disappointed when WAMO-FM brought in Porky Chedwick, who tried to combine 1950's "boss jock" style with 1960's "underground" music. It was a real oil and water combination.
