I had the same experience in the 70's at Catholic school.
The nuns would wheel in a 21 inch B&W set to have us watch various educational shows. One of them I remember was a Canadian documentary about poverty in Africa.

WQED blocked out their daytime schedule for educational programming aimed at schools, and if I was home sick I would often watch them. An eight-year old boy found Professor Julius Sumner Miller demonstrating principles of physics with various toys much more entertaining than the soap operas running on the other three channels.
