I remember a series of prime-time specials in a kind of magazine format called PBL (Public Broadcasting Laboratory) that ran circa 1967-68. They were the first experiments in public television beyond the strictly educational. One I remember was an evening-long examination of racial issues that included such segments as a play performed by black actors in whiteface. I'm pretty sure CPB was established during the LBJ administration, so these probably were their first efforts.
