I think in the case of broadcast radio it really WAS better in the good old days. You never had these long stretches of dead air that you hear now every time some computer has a hiccup. People used to take pride in not letting screw-ups go out over the airwaves. Now a computer can crash for twenty minutes or more and management shrugs and says "at least we're not matching its FICA taxes".
