Subject: Killdeer Plains

A spur of the moment trip to Killdeer Plains late this afternoon resulted in a spectacular sight. After combing the owl woods and coming up with 3 long-eareds but no saw-whets, we stopped to put the scope on some hawks. A few minutes later the sky was filled with short-eared owls. There were 20+ calling and circling around and around in ever widening circles until they dispersed in all directions for their evening hunt. We saw many more as we drove the roads but have no way of knowing if they were from that original group or additional birds.

Other than that, the usual large numbers of harriers, red-taileds and kestrals were seen. Unfortunately, we had not given ourselves enough time to look for anything else.
