I saw them too on Friday. Out in force were these little creatures called, I think, Martins. Maybe someone can help me with the identification. They were ferret like and brown all over with yellow breasts and black eyes, like a doll's eyes. They were all over the trail at dusk approaching within 4 feet of my son and me. They were in trees having a Battle Royale with Flickers and Squirrels. The Flickers were pretty noisy in their opposition to these little critters that, I presume, were there to steal eggs. The best sight was a squirrel that rammed a Martin off a branch into a tree beneath where it caught a twig and continued about its business.
