I received a private email from someone who had seen a similar cardinal in a metropark and was told by the naturalist it had a parsitic mite problem. Seems plausible. But also curious that Matt and I would see the same result within a day of each other. The molting response would seem to support the similar timeframe of the sightings, but if molting is the cause, why aren't these birds seen more often? It's not like there's a lack of blue jays around. Tom? Elliot? Any more definitive answers?

Thanks everyone. At least I know I'm not crazy.
