Subject: Report From Crane Creek

Birding was good, but not great, along the bird trail this morning. I played hooky from work and joined my dad hoping for a big fallout after last night's and this morning's good conditions for migration. Maybe conditions were too good -- lots of stuff (e.g. swifts, Blue jays, pipits, bobolinks, goldfinches, warblers) was moving east overhead along the beach. I probably saw at least 10 Indigo buntings, none perched for more than about two seconds. All told, we had 19 warbler species, most in low numbers. Best were a male Hooded and an Orange-crowned (heard). I found a single Black-billed cuckoo in the cottonwoods along the beach. Baltimore orioles were plentiful, and White-throated and White-crowned sparrows were abundant -- many clearly continuing their northward journey high through the trees. Lingering birds included a couple of Hermit thrushes and a Rusty blackbird. There were also a couple of Snowy egrets along the causeway and at least 7 shorebird species (including Semipalmated plovers and Least sandpipers) in the flooded field at the intersection of Route 2 and Benton Carroll. I heard at least a couple of folks mentioning that they had seen 5 Cattle egrets along Krause Road early in the morning.
