Subject: Pileated Woodpecker; migrants

As the warm front approached on Sunday, May 12, a huge fallout of warblers and other migrants occurred in the oak openings. 73 Kingbirds were counted in fields near the corner of Reed & Girdham Rds, and I found 104 species in only four hours of birding in the Whitehouse area. The day's highlight was a Pileated Woodpecker, which called repeatedly as it moved through the forest south of the Girdham-Reed intersection. It was glimpsed briefly as it bounded through the trees near the woods edge.
