Subject: Wood County Big Day

Saturday 7/27/02, Jeff and I decided to take a shot at a July Wood County big day. The opportunity for a good shorebird number made a 90+ day appear to be within reach. We started the day around 5:45 a.m. and ended around 7:00 p.m., with an additional post-dinner "search" for nighthawks which lasted until about 9:45. Who would have guessed they would be so late putting in an appearance?

Total number of species for the day was 89. We managed 9 shorebirds despite the fact the river was up and the shorebird numbers there were down significantly from Thursday. The most numerous shorebird between Grand Rapids and Waterville was spotted sandpiper. There were also a dozen or more Caspian terns at various spots along the river. But the best shorebird was a ruddy turnstone at the BGSU golf course pond. Other nice surprises for the day were 1, possibly 2, osprey at the North Baltimore quarry (the summering common loon is still present there)and a northern bobwhite calling right by the parking lot at Wintergarden Park in Bowling Green. All in all, not a bad day for bird-poor Wood County.

And oh yeah, Greg's prediction for probable birds - 89 of course. That's twice now he's done that. Is that scary or what?!?!? Of course, I didn't agree with his list (it's obvious he doesn't bird Wood County or he'd know better than to expect some of those birds) and of course our 89 did not match the 89 on his list. Still, pretty weird stuff.
