 The closest D3 match to the Ivies, in terms of both strong academics and strong football, would probably be Johns Hopkins, which reached the D3 national semifinals this year. As a top-tier D3 program, I suspect that JHU would not be embarrassed against a weaker Ivy or Patriot squad.

However, your point about football attendance remains valid. JHU maybe gets 1,000 per game (despite being in a far larger city and having far more students than, say, Williams). Of course, lacrosse does better.
