Ridiculous ending to the Penn game. MD went up by 2 on a free-position with around 5 to go *and* won the draw. They got a good charge (sorry, don't know the technical term) down the middle by one of their better scorers, but Penn knocked her off the ball (possibly a foul), then went down and scored off the break. Penn won the next draw, got a couple of good shots (including a free position by their best scorer Anna Brandt, albeit from a bad angle), couldn't get it in. Maryland went back down, got another good attack down the middle, but Penn again knocked the player off the ball (very likely a foul) and got the ball into the Terp end and their final timeout with 0:56 remaining. When play resumed they threw it around the perimeter until about 0:25 remained, and then got serious; with about 12 left they got it to Keeley Block at 45 degrees to the left of the goal; she tried to put a move on defender Neve O'Ferrall (no sic) and . . . fell down, O'Ferrall scooping up the ball and running for the left side.
Now, at this point, there are ten seconds left, I don't think there were any Penn players on the left side between O'Ferrall and midfield, and she already had a good head of steam. It would have taken at least five to six seconds for any Quaker to track her down, and at that point they would have been much too far away to score even if they could get the ball. For that matter, if O'Ferrall had simply launched the ball high in the air towards the Penn goal, by the time it came down the game would have been over. Instead, she flipped the ball back towards the center of the field to Sophie Halus. . .who missed it. Penn midfielder Gracie Smith charged in, scooped it up, and while getting the heck fouled out of *her*, flicked it to Erika Chung, who was wide open in front of the goal. She bounced it in with only two seconds left to tie.
In the first OT, Quaker frosh Orly Sedransk made a nice save, Penn got a couple of shots off but ended up running out of shot clock, off which Terp mid Kori Edmonson got a fast break, but was almost certainly fouled by defender Natasha Gorriaran and did not get a shot off. Penn coughed it up for another MD fast break, but again, they couldn't get a shot off before the buzzer. In OT #2, the draw caused the ball to bounce to the sideline; one of the MD players caught up to it but couldn't keep it in (possibly helped along a bit by Penn; in fairness, Brandt got hit in the face so hard she lost her goggles with no call either) and the Quakers took over. With about 1:50 left, attack Catherine Berkery parked herself at the left side of the goal; the defender initially picked her up but left her there as the ball moved in front of the goal. The ball went to Chung behind the right side, as Berkery casually got space from her defender, then suddenly accelerated from left to right behind the goal. Chung hit her perfectly as she started to curl around the right side; she swung the stick around and put the ball in the high left corner just before the defender knocked her over.
Sadly, this has probably just earned them a butt-whooping out in Evanston on Thursday, but still, one of the most amazing victories I've ever seen Penn get in any sport.
