There's no need to be sheepish or apologetic when celebrating your daughter getting a recruiting letter from Yale. That is wonderful news. A recruiting letter is a recruiting letter. In eighth grade!

I've mentioned here before that, about a year ago, I was on one of the semi-annual boys' weekends I celebrate with my college roommates. My friend George said, "When I find a reason to be happy, I wallow in it."

I've tried to embrace George's philosophy.

I'm happy for your daughter. I'm happy for mine. Some of life's victories are huge, thank goodness. But most of them are modest. Let's wallow in them all.

Congratulations to your daughter. May she be a Yalie suiting up in blue and white at the John J. Lee Ampitheater in 2029. Unless she is recruited by that superior college in Hanover.
