Subject: Top of the Ticket , to Run or not to Run?

Excellent message, Sean.

I've been intending to put something together like that "one of these days". I feel compelled to explain and lobby for exactly that strategy in all future elections.

Here in Idaho, we left the top slot (governor) open. A non-member crackpot paid his own filing fee for the thrill of being able to say he ran for governor once in his life. With a warrant out for his arrest, he very deliberately did NOT make himself available for ANY media. Neither I (state chair) nor the police could find him. Though we disavowed any affiliation, he did hurt us.

Worse, after the election (fortunately) he really lost it, grazed his chin and shot a hole in his apartment in an apparent suicide attempt + charged the police with a sword + was tear-gassed out of his apartment (naked) ... Oh he got PLENTY of media. Forewarned by his landlady, I press-released to make sure the media did NOT say "HE REPRESENTED the Libertarian Party". Though many did us a favor, simply saying he had run for Governor, just as many said "Libertarian Candidate for Governor". It hurt a bunch.

Anyway, that's close to the worst-case scenereo. Your reasons for filling the top slot and your approach to the job were/are ideal. I hope we ALWAYS find someone of your character and speaking talent to run our centerpiece campaign from now on... or at least close to.

I will be posting your article at our website.
