Bravo. Thanks, genuinely, for the response that cited actual occupations. I agree whole heartedly in what you said, regarding the truth that those occupations or campaigns did occur. Whether they should have occured is of some debate.
In hindsight it's simple to say the Russians and/or communism never would have been a threat to US freedoms. Was communism a threat to the freedom of those that lived under it? Is it still a threat to the freedoms of those that currently live under it? Yes. Then why should the US have not suspected communism would have been, and can be, a threat to the soveriegnty of free market Americans? There's no way of knowing, until someone invents a time machine and tries US vs. Communism policy differently.
The US has only recently installed the moniker of Super Power Monopoly. I don't believe Capitalists beat Communists through violence, but, through representing and promoting individual liberty and free trade. At the same time, I'm not so foolish to believe that people in the world will just get along and drop their hatred of the US, and drop the old notion of empire building, if the US becomes an isolationist society, (i.e. butt-out), however appealing that may sound. There will always be evil and greed in the world. Additionally, a portion of our economic success depends on outside dollars.
I'm not endorsing this war between the US and Iraq. I am in support of finding those guilty for the 9/11 attacks. Obviously the US affairs in the middle east have entirely to do with US dependence on oil, US support of Israel, and US support for Judaic/Christian philosophies. My understanding is that the same goes for most all of Europe. Though those nations merely hide behind the blanket of the UN, otherwise known as US.
If the solution to the US middle east involvement is to move out entirely, is it too late? Can the US enemies, (and the US does have enemies), let that happen? What's in the mind of Iraq? Saudi Arabia? Whom is dependant on whom?
I believe we need to free our economy from foreign oil and develop our own energy resources. If that means drilling US soil for a decade till there is a better more economical energy resource developed, so be it. Do we need to worry about the spread of communistic indoctrination in foriegn lands anymore? Probably not, if we can somehow provide their markets with American goods and resources, therby promoting free trade.
Do I want the US to be a leader (by example) of the free world? Hell Yes!
Do I want the US to be sheriff of the unjust world? Hell No!
Do I believe there is, still in the year 2002, a holy war going on in many parts of the world? You beter believe it!
Do I believe in support of the Nation of Israel, and stand up for Judaic/Christian beliefs. Yes, unwaveringly!
Do I believe in US open borders? Yes
Do I believe we need to reassess US foriegn policy and take steps today to improve our foriegn relations? Yes.
Do I believe Iraq is ruled by a dangerous "albatross" that must be cut from the neck of the US? Yes.
Do I have the answer how to do it? No.
And, will the rest of the "free" world allow the US to take that step back? I don't know. We're between a rock and a hard place. It's too easy to simply tell Saddam, "Sorry, we didn't mean any of it, and yes we support Israel." So easy that I'm afraid it won't work. It's much more complicated than that.
In the end, it's my opinion that every violent situation the US has been involved with through out her history is unique to the next. All the US foriegn occupations cannot be thrown into one big bowl and explained as a grand scheme developed 80 years ago by a round table of men. Shit happens, even in the past. The past however is beyond our reach. So too is the future. We are living in a product of US past successes and errors in judgement.
Some policy was probably good, some was undoubtedly bad. I'm quite thankful for my family that fought in France during WWII. Good Policy. I'm not very confident the lives lost in vietnam (due in large part to a battle fought from Washington), were worth that. Bad Policy.
Sometimes there is a time defend, and sometimes when the price is high, a strong offense is the only defense. I only hope that it does not come down to that.
Don't simply say pull out. What I was looking for from the article Mr. Wrights wrote entitled, Why do "they" hate "US", was greater clarification of the problem and a solution which examines the circumstances of any possible action we might take. Just pulling out of everything could be as fatal as going headstrong into battle. As Americans, we all need to take responsibility for our actions. I drive a car and use a lot of foreign oil, and I support a free Jewish state. I support that bad policy simply by using oil. I imagine all those reading this BBS do too. If you don't want foriegn oil, then agree to be energy independent. If that means drill in Alaska, drill in Alaska if it will save us money.
There's more to it, than just oil too. The US should maintain a close friendship with Israel, even if that means the US is hated by the Palestinians and the rest of those like minded morloks. If so, prepare for violence against US. We cannot live in a world free of violence, and absolute security. There is a price for everything, especially for freedom. There will always be evil. Know that. And prepare to defend against your attackers.
Why do "They" hate "US"? I don't believe it to be as simple as you make it out Mr. Wrights.
Regarding interests in entertainment... watch what you want! I fail to see the connection between considering oneself a free marketeer and one's choice in television programming. Personally, I like HBO, it's not TV. wink wink
For those who haven't read it yet. There is a great piece by Congressman Ron Paul which eloqently states a position which we can all probably see great reason in. My only regret is that he doesn't provide a solution for the shit storm we're in right now with Saddam. Never the less it's a great piece that better accentuates Mr. Wrights mob mentality diatribe. Worth looking at if you haven't yet:
