TKM, that is an interesting point you raised about how common it was to have this melodramatic format starting with All in the Family to the present day. I wonder if MTS was a pioneer in this format in 1960. When I think of other sitcoms being aired at the time, I can't imagine them having a serious issue underlying the episode. If anyone else can, I'd be curious to know.
