Like TKM, I don't remember and haven't seen much of the first season but I too enjoy the way melodrama is handled in the later seasons. I like how the problems are treated with comedic sensitivity. Can you imagine how Archie Bunker would have reacted if Gloria would have had triplets and couldn't tell them apart (like Katie in episode 293 "Three's A Crowd")? I love the running joke in that episode about baby Charlie being the one with the goofy look on his face. But, in the end Katie wasn't made to feel like she was a bad mother and her insecurities weren't reinforced by cruel jokes. I'm not putting down "All In The Family" or shows like it (they've brought many important issues to the public), but watching gentler shows is a refreshing break from reality.
