I don't know if I would say he was lovable in his roles, except maybe in a TV sort of way. Ralph Cramden (Jackie Gleason) was lovable in that way too, but a real-life husband like him would be considered downright abusive. Frawley in ILL was a greedy old coot, and in M3S was a sarcastic old grouch, but the viewer always had a sense that underneath (WAY underneath)lay a heart of gold. I don't think I would like someone who is really like that, though. Not many people would, I bet.

As for his relations with his co-stars, I did read he and Vance couldn't stand each other (like in ILL, only without the underlying love). I also read somewhere that Lucy and Vance had a somewhat turbulent relationship, though, if true, that would make it hard to understand why they went on to work four more years on "The Lucy Show".

I'm curious about something, Geoff. How much does Dawn Lyn know about Frawley? They never worked together so far as I know, and he died when she was not much more than a baby, if that old. Was it just what she heard about him from people he had worked with? No reason why I'm asking, just idle curiousity.
