It could be that Cecille simply changed her name; or, perhaps she was hiding a divorce by using the title Miss, since that type of thing may still have been done by people in the 60's who desired prominence, and she probably qualifies. It is interesting how she suddenly appears in California, "on a little vacation," and she calls Katie, and no mention is even made of Katie's grandmother and her Aunt Annie, who live in the area. But it's probably assuming too much to think she was estranged from the family (divorce or not) and she saw Katie as vulnerable to her ways ["interference"]. I suppose she just had to be 'created' to fit a plot a writer had in mind, but the fact that she was 'Miss Blackman' and there was no connection made with Katie's relatives might suggest the writer(s) meant to imply there was more to this situation than we see.

It's also interesting they say nothing about what type of business she was in. Her nice clothes, and maybe her 'finishing school' eaiquette, indicate she had money; but there is also reason to believe getting a free room at the Douglas house was her intention all along, and she is a subtle manipulator as well as a busybody.
