So far I have found the steel tripod mast cheaper than an alloy mast. It is also more stable. It is easier to climb up than an alloy mast as the bracing members are used as mast steps. It has a unique sound with the wind flowing through it. The only real disadvantages are the rigidity and that it has to be assembled lying down. So far I have discovered no corrosion as the whole assembly is double galvanised and dip painted. The rigidity is the only real reason I am thinking of replacing it as when Ice Maiden is returned to the water in the spring I will be spending a considerable amount of time in the Southern Ocean over the summer before setting out on a circumnavigation with a crew of three (that includes the cat) that will take some three to four years.
