Subject: Radar and AIS
In reply to: Colin 's message, "Radar" on 19:16:33 07/03/09 Fri

I also have a new old boat (finally) - though without radar. I am going to bring the boat south from SF to LA in the next few weeks.

Currently I can't afford a radar, and don't really want the power consumption, windage, etc anyway.

I am considering getting an AIS receiver to connect to a laptop so I have some way of tracking larger vessels as there is a strong possibility of fog along the coast.

Does anybody have experience with AIS systems? Is it worth the expense? Or should I save the money and just rely on human senses?
