I think from practical experience the biggest problem is draw in the stove. There are many types and they work. The bugger is the first 10 minutes, which in a small boat with the best stove on a windy night, when you need it, will damn near kill you. You've got to get her drawing.

This is not so easy.

Those who know me in the Renegade years know I had it figured out, and the stove was a damn near chemical defense system. We all hate having the big powerboat blow into the anchorage late and anchor close--with a 4 pound anchor--and run generators all night. What I did was shut the hatch and run the wood stove, likely stewing beans or something that took about 4 hours of burn while I worked through a rum bottle. Of course, was burning drift wood, which was smoky, but also fish floats, plastic debris, and any old shit I could find on the beach. A fish float burns pretty hot. And it will warm your cabin up nicely.

This is why I advocate a heavy steel stove with gas. Once it's hot, it will draw. Make it hot with something that won't stink to high heaven and near kill you in the cabin. Once it's hot, you can burn 120 weight crank case oil in the thing, nicely, and you'll be ducky. The powerboat next door will need a new paint job.

I'm not kidding.
