Hey Zach,

Actually I think I count as two heathen scoundrels on Tim's forum. Not everyone there enjoys my responses to their "an engine is a safety device" mantra.

I wasn't picking on your Triton when I mention lack of sail area in my other post. There are no shortage of CCA boats that are way under canvased. That was the age of free overlap so designers deliberately reduced the working sail area. Aren't we lucky.

Actually in some ways, okay many, PHRF rating are very misleading. First, I believe they are ratings with overlapping headsail and usually spinnakers. Second, as you stated, they assume a certain wind speed.

Your Triton and my modified Shields have about the same sail are and the Triton rate about 255 where the Shields rates 168. Now I don't expect a coastal cruiser to keep up with a skinny race boat but come on that 87 seconds per mile and I think the Shields rating is with a working jib. The other thing I constantly remind myself is that light air performance is not relative. It doesn't matter if my light air performance is better than a Catalina 30. He is going to start an engine when the wind dies and I am going to row. Light air performance is absolute. My goal, the goal, is to maintain boat speed as wind speed approaches zero.

Anyway I am not trying to depress you or dis your boat. I think it helps to know what you are up against. I like your idea of keeping the fractional tall mast and going to a mast head jib. There are two side to the SA/D ratio so I say go after displacement as well. Your are heavily modifying and restoring your Triton so have a go at any excess weight. Maybe a simpler interior. Raise the waterline a few inches. Tritons have sailed the oceans without engines before.

I will be follow along to see how it goes.

Cheers, Bill
