A worthwhile read, if one enjoys a browbeating, is "Radical Simplicity" by James Merkel, who makes a very convincing case for both those points, in in far greater detail than I do. When we have average levels of consumption in the United States that outpaces Europe by 2 to 1, by most of the "livable" world by 5 to 1, and the rest of the world that lives in poverty 60% or greater by 20 to 1 or more--it's very easy to see that we consume more than we produce--but I think most importantly as the climate change data rolls in with more and more clout--that we destroy vastly more than we ought, and this destruction will create real casualties.
