... in their comparison of driving a boat across as opposed to sailing is found here:

"Beowulf, our 78-foot ketch cost $3.09 per mile..."

!!!!SEVENTY EIGHT FOOT???? Put the nose into the wind and I could land a Piper Cub on that deck without a tail hook!

The basic maintenance on a 78 foot anything is going to be astronomical. Much like fuel is not the biggest expence on operating an F-22 fighter jet, a monster luxury sailing yacht (with crew???) would as a percentage, have fuel very low as compared to the labor costs for the trained yacht yard personnel and their very specialized materiel, tools, and other 'things' to take care of all of the myriad of very impressive gadgets, systems and pretty polishing that are part of owning a luxury yacht as opposed to those of us with a good, stout reasonable sailboat, devoid of ESSENTIALS such as satellite controlled prostate stimulators or electronic poodle exercise machines. ;^).

Considering the cruising costs of a small, (25-25 ft) sailboat with not a lot of silly frills, I cannot see a comparable power boat being anywhere near as economical, easily maintained - especially outside of the developed western world where parts, trained mechanics/technicians and delivery services are not as common, as reliable or often not available at all. I cannot have refrigeration failure - because I do not have a refrigerator. If I want ice in my drinks in the evening and a warm bed, I'll date a woman ashore with a refrigerator. ;^Q Haaaaar!
