Subject: Mast Step

Firstly a big thanks. Just read Wind and Tide (probably one of the most sensible books I have read on sailing). I owe you a beer you just saved me 10K, Probably a whole lot more if I take the next 20 years into account. Girlfriend thinks its nuts to yank the engine out but she will come around - usually does!

Anyhoo the question is - and I hope its not been done to death? How important do you guys think the position of the mast step is on a 26ft boat. I.e deck or keel stepped. What are the compression loads like? Even if your boat shows no sign of problems has anybody fitted a compression post or even considered changing the mast position because they feel that strongly about it. Im talking about a boat which shows no problems at this time with a fiberglass only, non sandwich deck.

Best Rgds and thanks
