I actually like the compromise Jay arrived at on Macha. There's a GPS receiver, but it just outputs coordinates as numbers. We plot our position on paper charts. If the GPS goes kapput (and in my experience that can happen for many more prosaic reasons that failure of the military-industrial complex) we have our last electronic fix on paper and can fall back on triangulation or DR.

Sarah has some celestial experience. I have none. I'd like to learn. As much for the sheer geekiness of it as anything else.

On depthfinders, I think it's a real convenience when anchoring/deanchoring to be able to see the depth instantly without sacrificing one crew member who could otherwise be sailing.

But I was looking at West Marine junk mailer the other day and they were advertising an $89.99 hand-held depth sounder. You know what else works as a "hand-held dept sounder?" Ummm... any damn heavy object on a string!!!! If you want to be fancy you can use a non-corrodable, shiny, heavy object on a nice knotted string.

People are weird...
